I have been told ICOM has discontinued these recently. Due to some of the components are obsolete. Anyone hearing the same thing?

It was only a matter of time for the 706 MKIIG
Great little radio...but showing its age
Also the IC-7000 is far beyond the 706..

That Alinco radio will likely be quite good..
I like Alinco's radios..

the IC-7000 looks nice .. but it is a bit outta my pricerange ... looks like i will end up just buying a radio for each band i want to be on ... hah will cost more in the long run ... but will be cheaper with every transaction.

I have a 706mkiig in my mobile. I like it, but the ic-7000 sure would be nice. I can't seem to understand how the price on the 706 kept going up and up. When I bought mine, they were only slightly more than the Yaesu 857d. I like the size of the display and also think that the settings and menu functions are a bit easier to use while mobile than the 857d (I had one of those, too). I've used the 7000 and knew that it would only be a matter of time before it would replace the 706 line. But man, it's hard to justify spending the cash that they want for that radio when you already have one that works well. And it's not just the radio...I would have to replace my linear amp interface, my tuner plug (for the screwdriver) and my PC interface. It adds up pretty quick. If they had made those components interchangeable between the two, I would be inclined to think about selling the 706, but it just doesn't make sense for me.

I wonder if Yaesu will have a new mobile soon that competes more directly with the IC-7000? The DSP and front end in the 857D is about the same as the 706, but nowhere close to what the 7000 is capable of.

I liked the MKIIG, the display was just "outdated" and seriously, you cant get control software and memory software for the 706? :bdh:

Personally..

I think the price of the 706 MKIIG kept going up and up..
To make it easier to have everyone transition into the IC-7000
(heck the price of the IC-7000 has come down)

Still..
I will keep both my 706 MKIIG and IC-7000..

I am looking forward to the IC-9100

Mole, I concur with your sentiments as well. I really like my 706MKIIG in the mobile and like you, would love to get a 7000 but I just can't justify the cost at this moment. I would really like to be able to use one of the "Better RF" controllers for my HS1800Pro but it won't work with the 706. I even wrote the maker of the controller asking if he intended to develop one for the 706 and got a flat "No". I'm not sure what the technical aspects are that makes him not develop one for the 706, but I'm sure if he did there would be profit to be made. Like you, I'll stick with my current setup since it is serving me well at the present moment.

I think the 706MKIIG is overrated.

I use mine for digital, but the RX on my old Kenwood 430 seems superior on phone.

Less noise.

I'll keep it for computer controlled modes for the moment, a Kenwood 2000 will probably kick it to the big truck.

Unless Flex comes down in price.

Now there's an understatement. Icom's are good, i owned an IC-735 for many years and wished I had never sold it, but even my oldie but goodie Kenwood TS-820S has vastly superior audio on both TX and RX then the Icom. Icom is not unique in this regard however,Kenwood is known for the great audio performance.

To quote Doc."If you ain't got a Kenwood, you ain't got squat."

Did I get that right Doc? :D
