I've recently started playing with APRSIS32 and have been pleasantly surprised by how well it works, and how many features it implements...especially since it's free! It uses OpenStreetMap for to render the maps, works with any KISS TNC, and also can make use of the Kenwood radios with built in TNCs (TM-D710, TH-D72, etc.) You can do messaging, APRS email, iGate, station tracking, just about anything you want with it. If you are into APRS, it's worth downloading and trying out the software which is available at aprsisce : APRSISCE for Windows Mobile and Win32

I heard this is the best out there on market now.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it was the 'best' on the market, but it certainly is much easier than others. If you've been using another program with APRS, there will be differences. Not too sure how 'huge' those differences are, how important to you, but there are some things I think could be 'improved'. I'm one of those that finally got 'UI-View' working and got used to how it 'did' things. I miss a few of it's features/characteristics, but that's just what I've gotten used to, you know?

To keep that comparison going, APRSIS32 is 'dead-nutz' easy to set up. That's the biggy! It works. Another biggy. It can use the internet -and- RF as a signal source. I would definitely suggest joining the user's group though, good place to ask questions, and the author is there too.

If there's any way to make a mistake/goof, I can do it! And did. The 'cures' were just a matter of getting used to a different way of doing things that I wasn't aware of. The operating instructions aren't the sort for complete 'dummy' users and they aren't absolutely complete, sort of. If you aren't sure about something, don't just do it, ask about it first. That's not absolutely 'true' either. Just be careful, you know?

Have fun!

I have just started using a different program called AGWTracker and I really like it so far. Here is the link: AGWTracker . It is simple to setup and you can use your own maps if you want. I think that it is similar it UI-view but better. Best of all it's free to use indefinitely. Take a look at it, you may be pleasantly surprised. (y)

Darryl,
I just got the AGWTracker but am having trouble setting the thing up. Everything seems to be working except for the mapping! How/where do you find the maps you are using, and how to get them loaded?

Ok Doc, here is the way to do it. It takes several steps but the final product is great. You need to create the map tiles. To do this you need a map program and a tool built into windows. Once the tiles are created and loaded into AGWTracker they need to be calibrated. Once that is done you are good to go. The tiles that I have were created by a friend but here are the steps:

1: To make the map tiles use your favourite mapping program (Mapsource or alike) and a map (street, topo, etc.). Zoom to the desired scale (5km, 2km, and 1km are what I have). Use the windows “Snipping tool” and take a picture of the zoomed area. At this time also record the lat and long coordinates for 2 places on the map that you can pinpoint at a later step. Make sure they are as far away as possible on the zoomed map. Save the image as a jpg or other comparable format that AGW accepts. Your next tile should be adjacent to the first one. Create enough tiles to cover the area you want.

2. Open the image in AGWTracker from the “Open” command then the “Open Map File”. Under the “Home” tab and select “Calibrate Raster Map”. Follow the directions and enter the 2 sets of coordinates that you recorded earlier. Do this for all your tiles.

3. Open your first map tile again. Once it is open next open all your other map tiles using “Load Layer Map File”. This will open all your map tiles and aligning with the coordinates you entered earlier. Now you have a master map. Save it as a “Map Project”.

Now when you open the Map Project you have a map that you can zoom and scroll. I think that is everthing. Have fun with it. Make as many maps as you like.(y)

BTW I am a slow typer and this took me 45 minutes to do. :w00t:(y)

Darryl,
Thank you! That gives me a starting point. 45 minutes to type? I'm afraid to guess how long it's going to take for me to understand what you just typed! LOL
Ah well, if it were easy it wouldn't be any fun, right?

I am one of the people who write the wiki for APRSIS32 and yes I agree it needs a bit of work. KJ4ERJ is coding stuff into the program faster than we can keep up with the wiki.
That said if you have a need for something that the software currently does not do, request it. You need to explain what you want though not point to another program.
The program is under active development and has features that as far as I know no other program has, such as QRU.
For example if you are in the UK send ?RPT2M to QRU and you will get the nearest 5 2M repeaters to your location and if you have a compatible radio you can auto tune with the repeater settings.
if you are outside the uk overide the default 100 miles from object by adding a distance so ?RPT2M 20000 will get 5 repeaters from the UK system anywhere in the world

the wiki is at Welcome to APRSISCE/32 - APRSISCE/32 The future of Amateur Radio APRS

APRS and Google Earth APRS

I have APRSIS32 installed and have worked with it for a couple weeks.

I Googled "Google Earth APRS". To my surpirse (I didn't know what to expect) my call letter "home" appeared along with hundreds of other APRS users.

So those who are looking for a more detailed base map than what comes with APRSIS32 with some APRS functionality (I don't know how much functionality because I only spent a little time), Google Earth APRS is worth looking at. The combination of the APRSIS32 and Google Earth APRS provides tons of capability.

Since I'm new at this, what functions of APRS have others found on Google Earth APRS?

When I google "google earth aprs", I get the links for aprs.fi and a .KML file to use with Google Earth. Is that what you're getting too? The aprs.fi site is awesome, btw.
