A ham that I know has a mobile ham radio with APRS in his car. He has this plugged into a GPS on his dashboard. What he is then able to view is where the different hams are on his GPS map.

My question is can the same be done with the Kenwood TH-D72 as far as plugging it into a GPS and being able to view other people that have there beacon on the map on the GPS. Yes I realize that the kenwood has the GPS built into it but it does not have a map that i can see where everyone else is.

If this is possible what do i need to do so. What kind of GPS would work for this?

Thank You in advance for your help.

You probably saw a Kenwood TM-D710 hooked up to the AVMap G5. The AVMAP G5 is being replaced by the G6, which will work fine with the Kenwood TH-D72. It should be available any day now as the expected release was May 2011. Expect it to cost around $500.

There is another possibility, like using a Garmin Nuvi 350, I think it was N2QDK(?) that did get the 350 to work with a Tiny-trak with a yaesu 7800? Some of the garmins had issues with displaying the APRS locations multiple times. I have no idea if it(Nuvi 350) will interface directly with the D72 for the NMEA waypoint data and I think it depends on whether the pins used on the Nuvi for the data are true USB or not. That info I found on the CD that comes with the D72, there is a statement about not supporting USB based devices for the output
