there tons of mods for the mosfet verson of the 959 thats currently what im running i have the shotkey reciever mod, channel mod, turbo echo, had all lights upgraded, andchanged to custom color.. you can also add dual mosfet finals, although to some ppl its not worth it i had a tech do mine looks and sounds great.. hope this helps you

Q17 substitution

:pop:I found this one receive mod improvement on Coppertalk. It involves changing out Q17(2SC1674)in favor of (2SC2999)or(NTE107) to increase the signal to noise ratio on receive in addition to doing D1&D2 and D30&D31.does anyone else know of this transistor mod? I've watched a certain radio repair/mod guy on You Tube and he changes out three transistors somewhere in the receive section(?) On 959's.

959 mods Mossfet version

Got my parts in to do surgery on my 959. Here's the list;2SB817(power amp),ECG153(Am Amp),ECG583(Am Detection&Noise Blanker)NTE107(TR17 receive mod)Viagra blue dot board 'B' version. Does anyone know if all these are needed for this particular radio?

Don't do the 2sc2999 mod. Its just a preamp on all the time. That radio doesn't need it. You will be chasing stations with the rf gain knob like everyone does with the president jackson.

2SC2999 mod

I'm not that technical. Perhaps you can explain how that circuit works. Here's the discussion from Coppertalk. the one mod that will make the biggest difference, and if you do nothing else; do this mod, is the TR17 change to a 2SC2999 transistor. the stock one is a 2SC1674 and has a higher noise figure.
by replacing it you will increase your signal to noise ratio by about 6db.
seriously, you will notice the difference after doing this one mod. you must re-tune the receiver coils next to the TR afterwards.
you can get them on the auction site.

EDITED:
Q37/2SA473 can be swapped out with a TIP42C. The 'C' version is rated at 100v/6A and the stock 2SA473 voltage regulator is rated at 50v/3A. Not really necessary to upgrade; but I like to put this in all of my radios for solid regulation. This can only help SSB stability a little.

Just remember to remove/replace all parts just the same way they came out.
Including a dab of thermal paste and clean solder joints.
Be sure you check all of your work and do one part at a time!

The 2SC2999e is an elective part. I would see if it is too strong and overloading the receive when put in. If it does; then just put the stock 2SC1674 right back in. Some radios benefit from this mod; some don't. Been there. I'd rather have a clean/undistorted receive - than one that is being over-driven. Keep the leads as short as practical; this can help to eliminate a small amount of receive noise.

DEFINITELY use the Schottky diodes in the receive and noise blanket circuit.
That is a decent/solid mod.

yea on the clean receive

Thanks. My main goal is to get rid of any unnecessary noise in the receive section and to hear distant stations at night when conditions are quiet. I suppose that when I finally get this radio aligned properly,it will receive a whole lot better. Some of those mods you described,I haven't seen those yet. I've been doing research for three months trying to get enough knowledge about this radio and what can be done to it and to be able to tell the difference between the good, the bad,and the ugly out there in radio land. Three months of research should have given you two discovery's. 1) There are many radio's out there that are much much better then a Galaxy 959. 2) All your 959 needs is a proper tune and alignment, extra channels, and if you prefer an un-locked clarifier. That's it. You should have been talking on your 959 for 2 1/2 months now.

tune and alignment

Yes I agree with the recomodations you've indicated but I've also been talking on it during that time. Thanks to the Galaxy's Tech and you and others,I have good counsel on what to do and not what to do. I have done the basic adjustments and I plan to send the 959 to a reputable radio technician to align it. In the course of these few months,I have gained a whole lot of knowledge about radios. It's been a long time since I was into this hobby. Back in the Eighties before the internet, you went by word of mouth and found someone to tweak your radio unless you knew how to and had the right equipment. It's about the journey as well as the destination. I thank you guys again at the wealth of knowledge you've provided. (y)
