I picked up a Uniden homepatrol HP-1. I have been using a 22' 10m antenna on a 20' pole to scan my local VHF & UHF stuff and LAPD which is a few towns over from me with success. Last night I took down that 10m antenna and put up a Diamond CR320A and ground plane kiton the same 20' pole. so far it is working a bit better than the 10m stick but, I was wondering if i would have better wide scanning using a SCANTenna Discone on the same 20' pole?

This is the antenna I am looking at getting:
Antennacraft by RadioShack ST2 Scanner Antenna Kit with 50 Foot Cable (ST2) from Solid Signal

I listen to voice from 37mhz through 1200mhz. P25/AM/NFM

The Scantenna is a good scanner antenna, not the best at 800 MHz but good for locals.Ditch the coax that comes with it and replace with something better, I used RG-6Q and happy with it.

I'm currently using ratshack rg58 and it inky has a few hair strands of shield (literally). Lol so I winder if the coax that comes with that antenna is any better + what's up with the 300ohm f connector thing on the antenna ? Have not made my purchase yet (haven't decided).

The 300ohm f connector thing is a balun, the coax supplied is cheap 75 ohm with F connectors.

The Diamond D-130J is highly regarded.

LMR-400 is reasonably priced at DX Engineering.

Not bad I'll add that to my comparison list.

Real quick can a discone antenna be mounted in the middle of a mast below a tx antenna ? Drew this Rad photo with my note 2.

A discone offers no gain, keep this in mind if you're trying to monitor far off stations.Does CHP still use VHF low band? if so, the Scantenna would give performance on that band.

Good to hear, I'll have to cut a dipole for VHF-Lo. I used to love sitting in my shack in NY and listening to CHP.

I've always enjoyed that antenna in the past. I just got back into scanner listening and will have to order another.

Well.......

I logged onto the interweb to order me a Scantenna. Apparantly, it is discontinued. I did see one being auctioned that was still new in the box. I should have bid on it. Guess I will have to look at something else.
