At the last hamfest/flea market for this year at DeAnza College in Cupertino Ca, I did not expect to find anything. Since I went to each flea market from the beginning of the season (season began in Spring and ends in Autumn), there really had not been too much there. But you know how flea markets are; you just never know what you will find on any given day.

So at one booth I see a TRC-448. Ask him if it worked.
He said:
"It has a carrier when I keyed it up on AM; so I guess it works. Didn't test it any more than that. Sorry . . ."

I then asked how much he wanted for it.
He said:
"Five bucks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . No - wait; three bucks . . . . . . . . . . . ."
I said "OK".

I already have one of these radios,; but the T/R relay is bad and I don't have the parts to fix it. So I figured it would make a perfect parts radio if nothing else. Came with mounting bracket, mounting screws, and the stock mic. Three bucks? Guess I finally found my parts radio.

Turns out the thing works perfectly when I took it home and wired it up. Have a mic adapter for the 5 pin DIN plug, so I put my Silver Eagle on it. Made several contacts on 38LSB and everyone said it worked outstanding from Sam Jose to New York with a beam antenna. Lord willing, I'll give it a full alignment and unlock the clarifier this winter when I get bored.

Needs to get cleaned up; but nary a scratch on it.

Just $3 for a radio legend!

I missed them all so far this year. I did go to the regular one a couple times. I bought one of those manual egg beater kinds of drills, on advice from Tom Lipton.

Those are excellent radios. I ran one for about 5 years as my base. I had a Radio Shack .64 omni and had a Turner +3 desk mic driving the TRC 448. Not a weak link in the chain.

GRATE find Rob ! the trc-448 always was a good talker in my books , i still have mine & hook it up every now and then just to make sure it has a pulse or let one of my radio buddies hear it on the air . Its bin in & out of a few trucks ,slurped a bit of coffee , withstood the bitter cold canadian winters , only to be missing part of channel display not too bad ?Had alot of radios over the years & most have gone down the road but a few like the 448 will be carried out after they carry me out ! ha haugh! later Bob.A.
