Cobra 25 WX ST with a mind of its own

Demon Cobra 25 WX ST

It will turn on BY ITSELF and squeal like a stuck pig, with the on/off switch off. The on/off volume control has no bearing on it, one can switch it on or off, and the radio stays on and squeals. It does stop of course if I unplug the power cord, and then will act normally, good Rx and Tx, up until it decides to squeal. This occurs with the radio off or on, as I've had the squeal happen while I had it on also. Diode bad? Switch seems to work well, and I did take a small bit of cleaner to it when it happened the first time, but it continued to do it. It doesn't happen every day, perhaps once every 3 weeks in my mobile, I have to unplug the back plug in order for it to stop, despite the on/off switch being off. Has anyone had this happen, and what was your fix? It's something that can turn the radio on, seeming to bypass the switch.

some radios by design the weather stays on for emergency alerts. I wonder if it is sticking on. never really worked on a cobra 25 with weather and not sure just which wire goes to it to disable the weather area. could look at a wiring diagram to see if you could unhook it.
here is a cobra bulletin that you might rad and see if you can unhook the wire they are talking about to see if that stops the noise. think it said a red wire on the cobras.

I worked on an old SS 360FM for a local op a few years ago. Rebuilt the whole radio with new caps and alignment. But the vol pot/switch was so wobbly and worn from years of use, I told the owner that it needed replacement. It would squeal or lose audio altogether because the shaft was so wobbly. Bought and replaced that pot/switch, and everything was right as rain after that.. He was pleased that he could use his radio again, as it was his favorite.

the only thing that still has power on it when you turn off the radio is the WX board. have seen them in cobra 29 radios do some stuff like your is doing. just think about it. when the radio turns off at the switch the wx board is all that is left with power on it. the alert is not powered with the switch. so what else could it be. as others said you have a ghost in the radio. check and make sure your switch turns off all the way. never saw one that stays partially on. if so the main radio would be on.
