could you use the galaxy 98-vhp with a donkeystomper hd-hg-2879 amp if I turned the power down on the 98-vhp to around 90 or 100watts driving it??

You'll smoke those in short order. 30-40W PEP max is all the HG's will be able to withstand, unless there's a massive swamping circuit on the input side. The HG's aren't as rugged as the Toshibas.

~Cheers~

If you must have a Galaxy; then any number of them will fill the bill. It doesn't need to be a high power radio to power that amp. In fact, you will most likely smoke it, as Xit13 pointed out.

Still want to use an amp and a Galaxy? Then you might consider a Galaxy 949, 959, or 979 - all of which have SSB mode and will drive that amp just fine with 20w input power into the amp.

Or perhaps you want a radio that is stable on SSB - which the Galaxy radios cannot provide? Then I'd suggest any number of Uniden radios that have SSB, like the five pin Cobra148GTL, Grant/XL, Grant/LT, PC-122/XL, PC-244, or even the new Uniden 980.

You went all in and bought the top of the line hot rod radio, if you want to add an amplifier it will have to be something like a 6 or 8 pill. Trying to run a 275 watt radio into a 350 watt amplifier will never work.

Even if you could de-tune the Galaxy 98 so you could run that amplifier no one will ever notice. Your already at 250-275 watts with your radio, your next step up in power will have to be 500 or more watts or you won't gain anything.

I;; stick with the 959..with the 2-pill

Take the leap. Fool you friends. Get a 4,6 or 8 pill high drive amp

I guess you could always get someone to put a switch on the back of the radio to turn off the built in amp in the Galaxy VHP. Only issue is that if you accidentally leave the amp in the radio ON = other amp goes "poof"

This is how someone else did the Galaxy 94 HP amp bypass mod. Should be similar in the 98 VHP model:
