Anyone have one? EHam reviews look OK.. QST not so much..

Looking for my first rig and this is only 'new' one in my budget.

I know it lacks filters and only has 3 pwr settings (100,10,1) though I heard low (not super low) can be tweaked up to like 20-25w from I read from 10w..

Junk! I got one in trade so I don't feel so bad.

The VFO dial is loose and sloppy. This is ridiculous because the VFO is the heart of the radio.

I think the power settings would have been more useful if it was variable.

Other than that, the audio is good and it has the basic features to get the job done but most of them are preset non adjustable settings.

Glad to see you are considering real HF radios as opposed to the exports.

I still say shop the used market for a Yaesu 450D. The D model is the newer version and will suit very well.

Good luck!

Over $500 on EBay.. Can't do it.. Using credit card for $180 (@ 30% Apr) for the possible Alinco and other $280 from refund..

Told you I'm broke.. And I prefer new with warranty..

Thanks though.. Anyone else?

i have one i put it in the car
i will not lie the VFO dial is week and feels loose. it Sucks! it is going to be the part of the radio you play with the most.. other then that i like the radio and it works Grate
There is 3 power settings 1/10/100 you can mode it with a switch for 1/10/50/100 i use 50 or 100
The receive is fine it has good clear TX audio I never had any one say it sounds bad. i would use a kenwood mic it will give it a bit more lows.
i have it in my car and it is stable in the cold days and in the summer. for my car it is a good radio because you can remote mount the face plate.. i wish they would make more radios like this..
but i would look for an icom 718 if your looking for some thing for in your home.. and get an auto tuner.

Plan is to use as base not mobile, so hopefully I won't have same issues with that.

Calls for a 20 amp power supply I have a converted supply pushing 24 amps with low RF fan in it, positioned 3 feet from top rig shelf (old stereo rack)..

I know I am beating a dead horse here but I really think your best option is used. I get the warranty thing but as I have said in the past I have only ever bought on "new" radio. While the Alinco is priced in your range it does have some short comings while there are some excellent used rigs in your price range.

Give it some thought....

the Radio works and for the price i cant ask any more for it.. comparing it to my Kenwood TS-2000 and Kenwood TS-405Sat its has nice receive.. it just feels cheep..
to add if you get one you will need an SWR meter the alinco doesn't have one

in the end i think getting a used one like an Icom 718 or an Yaesu FT-450D with the Yaesu your getting a built in auto tuner too...

K3ACZ,

Since you prefer new over used (as many of us do) the DX-SR8 appears to be the best fit for your budget at this time.
I say go for it and have fun!

Would a newer TM-v71a mic be plug-n-play with this?? I have that KW here for my 2/70 stuff.

I have an SWR meter. I was wondering on that. Thanks.

The Alinco DX-SR8 is pin compatible with any Kenwood 8pin HF radio mic the VHF/UHF radios use a different pings. you would have to rewire it but it can be done..
I use mine with the Kenwood MC-43S its the stock mic i got with my TS-2000 and TS-450Sat

Ignore the snobs. I've owned two SR8's. They are awesome radios for the money. Decent on board filters, potent audio and good sensitivity. Yeah, the encoder shaft isn't made by Mercedes Benz, but it works. I have also owned several DX-70TH's. Absolutely loved them. I used my SR8's for 99% CW use. I have owned countless Alinco HT's and 2 meter mobiles. Had very little trouble with any of them.

An SR8 is a damn good rig. Most Alinco haters just get up on their perch and parrot the same old story started by some old geezer years ago.

Rule number 1. Never let an Eham review influence your purchase.
