I get the impression that there is an awful lot of charlatons masgerading as "pros" on youtube to druming for business. Sometimes its just best to go with old skool folk who have been around for eons, thats just my take as a dumb noobie.
I've a tech but why don't you list a few of those old skool eon one's.
There's many out here who for whatever reasons don't fix equipment.
I'm sure they'd appreciate it if you could give them some leads . 73

I don't know any techs whatsoever. In summary my comment was suggesting using someone who's been doing this for a long time. Not a kid on YouTube talking tripe with NYPD Blue camera action. Lol

MikesRadioRepair videos and Mr. Carlsons Lab videos make a point of having the schematics with block diagrams to show the viewers they are using the procedures in the order suggested by the manufacturers. Those guys get praised from their viewers for the comprehensive and thorough videos.
For instance, when you are aligning a radio you should use the test points built into the chassis to insure the proper voltages are present and thereby ruling out component failure. When I go look at a "service" video and I don't see "service" but an ass load of hyperbole, I'm gone.

The problem is that YouTube consists of two types of techs.
Techs and those calling themselves techs.
There's no in-between. One cannot except items in the mail for repair and then come on this fourm (or any fourm) and ask questions on how to repair an item someone sent them. Or call, email, text ect a person who is indeed a technician so that they can be told what they need to do in order to repair a particular piece of equipment that was sent to them for the purpose of repair/refurbish.
It doesn't and shouldn't work that way.
A test center, oscilloscope and bench does not make a tech. I was lucky enough to find the tech that I use when I purchased a d104 off a gentleman in Texas. He turned me on to the guy that I've been using since day one. That was almost 3 years ago. After he did a couple of jobs for me I put his name out there for everyone else who like myself don't know the difference between a plate and an RF choke..
After that he got swamped. People began sending him things without even as much as an email. He's honest and even though he didn't speak with these customers or correspond via email or text he accepted the work he received (usually with a note taped to the item sent for repair) and sent the items back to those customer's repaired (after payment of course.)
That kind of left me having to wait a long time in order for my equipment to get fixed.
Forget about fixed, it took months for me to even be able to get in touch with him again.
His email box was full. His voice mailbox was overloaded everyday.
He found it impossible to read every email or listen to every voicemail, so I kind of got lost in the shuffle. No biggie.
I finally got a chance to speak to him and I know when I send him something it gets repaired and sent back in a timely manner. Me
Mentioning his name is doing anyone a favor. Others mention it several times a day in other post's.
Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to contact him if your not a customer who's already known to him.
I'm sure once he has cought up on everything he's got he'll begin to be able to except new customer's.
One must remember, he's a one-man show.
This is what he told me, 50-100 emails, and voicemails a day would be impossible for most anyone to contend with.
Everybody who's worked with him knows he's, honest, modest, and absolutely knows his way around any type of communications equipment. You won't catch any braggadocious comments, or delusional statements about modifications that will improve your receive by 5S units.

There's one thing I know for sure. There's no shortage of work on his bench.
And I hope that he continues to flourish. As long as he's working on equipment I know I have a professional to send my stuff to, even if I have to wait. Getting this type of equipment repaired correctly is a dying art form. Mostly everything I own glows in the dark. Even people with the knowledge to repair tube equipment, normally don't want to.
Whether it's an amplifier, transceiver, tube or transistorized he gets done right the first time.
In my opinion if there is anyone who has earned the title technician, it's him. Good luck to all 73. PS. It's difficult to do business with somebody for so long and not consider them a friend. Although I've never met him and probably never will, I do consider him just that.

I don't trust anyone on YouTube who can't hold the camera still, doesn't invest in some sort of tripod. If you are trying to sell your service you need to make an impression. The camera moving wildly about is clearly giving the impression that you's an idiot!
I had no idea that being an excellent cinematographer was a prerequisite to being a decent radio technician.
I guess we learn something new everyday. I always passed judgment on their technical skills as opposed to their cinematography skills since what I'm paying for his radio work and I couldn't care less how good their cinematography skills are.

I don't want my radio getting vertigo being spun around and around on Tim's bench. It's bad enough I watch some of his videos and suffer.

A decent radio tech will take pride in his/hers presentation and try to give the best video possiable. Hand holding the camera and moving it around widely just plain looks ridiculous.

Well they have thier customers too.

I suspect he does take pride in his videos since nobody else will show anything remotely similar in their videos. I also suspect that he doesn't have a clue about what you would like him to show you and what you would like to see in a video or how you or I would like him to present a topic, nor does he care about those things. He simply shows us what he wants us to see and there are certain things that he deliberately does not show us.
It's kind of hard to be a master of cinematography as well as a master of RF engineering all at the same time. I agree with you that there are better ways of making videos, but then again I'm not the one making the videos so I really have no say in the matter.

Similar to folks who are presentable with fake white straight teeth or boob jobs that normally get promoted on the corporate ladder based on their merits. Lol

I watched a Fine Tune CB Shop video on a Radioactive modded (Mike) radio. He talked about how good the mod was then talked about some not so good things about the mod. When he opened the radio he never allowed the viewer to see inside it, just kept rambling about he wouldn't do this or that but never letting you see anything except his meters on the wall. Can't trust that. You see sinead readings but you never see probes on test points in any of his videos and he acts like it's some kind of space science. Mr. Carlson's Lab (Paul) no only shows you what is wrong and why it went wrong he'll show you the fix and he will design and etch a pc board and show the science. That guy at Fine Tune in my opinion is less a tech than Paul or Mike is.
Besides when I send in my smoke free radio I don't want to see some guy in a video blowing a big huff of vape across it.
