Wow!!! Galaxy LC 998v most expensive export?

The amp assemblers didn't know shit about matched transistors until the dei transistors came out. They had to be matched because the QC was so bad. Most assemblers had to wait until someone else figured out the problem before they could even make a dei amp work.

I saw a video where Jokerman, retested these transistors and found they were not always truly marched. It pissed him off it would appear in the video.
He is testing beta gain aka hfe not wattage. He would need a higher voltage and current curve tracer feeding into a scope to do proper hfe testing. The Atlas Beta Tester tells you in the owners manual it is not accurate to use on high power rf bjt's.

When I worked at a repair facility 1991-1993 everything was repaired or built in-house with MP,s MQ's etc......If only one transistor poped we preferred to replace them all but even when we just replaced one it had to be matched. I often had to sort large batches if they were not already beta matched with color code or letter code. It paid to sort your own though even with pre-coded parts because you would always find some diamonds and some duds. You could charge the customer a premium or at least we did for higher gain devices.

I normally do not worry about matched quads and higher I just worry about matched pairs since we do push pull in pairs of 2 with bjt's. Obviously, you would not want one pair of neighbors to have hfe of 20 and the next pair to be 105 that would create some balance issues but other than insane examples it should not be an issue. Most Toshiba 2sc2879 average in the 85db range if your sample size is large enough. Each OEM has it's own slightly different range. Most of the HG's I have seen are in the 40-60 range which would be low beta for Moto/Macom/Toshiba. My sample size is not that large though. Mine have been in the 64db ballpark.

Jokerman installing high gain devices is a waste of good parts. Even a high beta part cannot last long in a bad circuit design with even worse soldering!!!

This is probably as pricey as it gets for a mass produced export.

I have one of these done by Harddrive and it is everything I ever wanted in a radio. I get nothing but compliments on how great and clear I sound and yes it was expensive.

It is never a good idea to have an amp built into the bottom of your radio. This is especially true when the quality control and build quality of the radio does not match the price tag. Add in blacked out DEI bjt transistors and out of the bock 3rd order harmonics etc......If the amp goes out your out a radio and an amp while waiting for it to be repaired and if the radio goes again you are out two pieces of gear.

Can you say heat soaking parts? Heat is the enemy of electronics it is not like they are using 105C or 125C caps in those.

They would have to shrink the chassis and add a host of features you typically find in amateur radios.I would want name brand transistors or a move to rf specific MOSFETs or LDMOS. They would have to address that terribly noisy dual opamp front end they are so proud of.

Most shops want just under $800 for the RCI2970N4 and they are simply are not $800 worth of radio.

Having only seen the LC 998v on youtube I have no experience with it. That said what I have seen on yutube does not inspire me with confidence.$1299.00. I would love to see how long those last with an output power of 900watts! LOL If you watch enough of his video's you see that the rms versus pep numbers seldom work out right mathematically. You also see the 4:1 ratio broken constantly!

A good tech can fix that noisy dual opamp front end with a 2sc2999 and a few other parts. It's kind of fun using a radio that is commonly looked upon as being a turd that's had several of its inherent limitations overcome.

I do not have an issue with the RCI2950 or 2950DX I do have many issues with any radio that is a marginal black box that has had a marginal 4 transistor bjt amp built into to with substandard parts. If the parts are so shitty that you have to black out the OEM's name it is a worthless venture and you are tossing good money after bad!

Who looks down on the RCI2950 other than Amateur radio operators? The problems with that radio are all related to cheap parts being used.If the quality of the parts was at least as good as they where in 1990 ( no not perfect then either) the radio would be 3X times the radio that it is today. At the price they want for a 2970N4 they should be using parts at least as good as what was used in the early Uniden uPd858 chassis's. Let's face it Ranger/RCI has continued to take money out of the radio's it builds every place they can! The problem is that it has gotten to the point that the radio's are being drastically affected.

Most companies are just buying off the Chinese market and having a different face plate tossed on an existing chassis and it shows. Most of these have some really good design features but it is always the details both in user interface and functionality where they fail to deliver. These Chinese companies almost never fix the problems either too many people are just fine with buying their gear and re-branding it as is. Look at all the revisions to the front panel/control/face plate on the Stryker's they have had a ton of revisions to that and the main board and I would bet dollars to doughnuts that "Stryker" was not the one calling for revisions! LOL

I would get any export of your choice 2950, Lincoln II+, Yeti Optima, AT-6666, Stryker etc......GIve it a proper alignment to factor specifications not a single watt more. Dial the rf output to 1/2 of the factory max output and let the radio swing. Put an amp that can handle that power behind it. If you have a real tech not some hillybilly toothless whiz bang idiot then you can also have them shape the audio to suit your voice and the mic of your choice.

Make sure you are only putting about 1/2 of the power that the transistor OEM states is needed for full drive per device into said amp.

If you want to have 1000 watts of output and do not want to put your technician's daughter through college purchase an amp that can do 2000 watts rms then under drive it.

If you are into cheap Chinese made transistors stock up. Not because they are going away or anything but because even if you do everything right we have seen some shoddy quality control from these devices. If our tech does not have to wait on parts they can turn it around a lot faster for you!
