In a box in my basement I have the docs for the WS mod.... its a thicc manual... lmao. that's the most amount of work for the smallest gain I've ever seen in a radio mod, even with someone competent its hours of work!
I just picked up an original JFK from france. Need someone to do the mod to unlock it, as it's stuck on straight 40. (i think a couple traces need to be cut and 2 crystals added). Radio otherwise works but can use a tuneup/check. Puts out about 6w max with rf power up. Also need to...
Hey back in the day I kept a 250A alternator in my 89 Tempo with a section of 2 x 4..... but my resident radio craftsman/machinist isn't around anymore.....
I have no problem with either but on a base setup preference would definitely be
tubes, 3-500Z or large pls. Generally cleaner output, higher tolerance for unintended abuse, etc.
For mobile use I would consider selling a kidney to have a dual BLF188XR LDMOS amp though, problem is...
Any specific reasons?
My current problem with yaesu gear is I sit in front of it for 5 minutes and am basically totally lost, I'd have to spend some serious time figuring stuff out.
That 991 though is one of the few radios that they have, from the outset, that I don't completely hate.
You're somehow getting that out of a DX350? Hell back in the day with mine, even with real Toshibas, I think 300 was pretty much the max on 14vdc. (and I never ran it that hard because the linearity was obviously compromised at that point.).
For some reason my mind skipped a step and I thought it was one of those deals where someone had blown out the pot or something. Hell in that case if the DAW pot works fine I would just keep using that.
One thing I'm noticing on this radio... stupidly good ears. With preamp on even some of the weaker signals will come in while I'm driving around and sound like they're not far away, etc. Unless I get lucky and the other guy has a low noise floor at his station, I end up in a situation...
Because there are no large (over a few hundred watts) mass produced mobile HF amps on the market that are worth a shit, the only one left that's commonly available is the ALS-500M which is basically a W8JI garbage pile that a bunch of hams dance around because of all the filtering in it as if...
Honestly on a TS350 you're better off just fixing the input swamping so it'll take a normal radio with the "dial a watt" switch turned on for AM use. Might take talking to a few people but its probably about $5 in parts to get the right value resistor in there to swamp a 4W dead key...
Nice, you'll be hearing the beedoop etc soon enough. :)
Also protip- at least as shipped, the memory bank in this radio is monolithic. EG, its not XXX channels per side, its like hundreds of channels all inclusive. So what I did is I started my UHF crap at like 200+ or something...
Problem with all the TS amps is all of them have shitty wire that is too small for the amp, and that fuseholder will melt off in short order. You don't have to go FR on an amp that small, but some of those big capsule type fuseholders used in car audio work very well. I forget what...
Reminds me of a MaCO I sold my friend out in WI.... I have to reconnect with him and find out if it still working, it was a 1 driving 3 8950, but the tech I had set it so the radio drove all four.... much much nicer.
