I've been using one of these about 3 years.
I can only think of three complaints I had with the base radio.
First is the volume control as you mentioned. Being used to radios that had different knobs for volume and tuning, this took some getting used to .
Second, for what these cost...
I have both a VX8DR and a VX8GR. Ignoring price, to me these are some things to consider in comparing them:
PROS FOR THE DR
the DR is waterproof to some extent, the GR is just "spray resistant"
the DR has a dedicated speaker/mic jack with a screw on connection
some of the commonly used...
i think you may have a problem in that some of your constraints are colliding with one another.
you can have the bands you want, the modes you want, and all of it in one radio, but its not going to fit the price you want.
there are many radios that do any one of these bands and do more than...
I know they have been made in the past, I'm wondering why not now?
I look at my FT817 and wonder, how hard would it be to shrink it some more and make an HT with the same or at least some of the capabilities it has?
If they made something like a VX8 that had SSB too, I would buy one in a...
If you only want it for use in a real emergency, I would arm yourself with a bit more info.
Which band has the most repeaters within range of you?
Which band do the local emergency services organizations use for their emergency communications?
What else do you think the radio needs to...
vx8dr vs vx8gr
I have both of these radios, and there are good and bad points for each of them.
They use the same batteries and the same drop-in charger. This is cool because even though the GR is relatively new, the accessories are already out there, and in my case I already had the bigger...
seems like a nice solid radio. the belt clip is similar to the one on the vx-150, which I have always liked. I wish the vx8r had a similar one.
this will sound lame, but I find the aesthetics a bit disappointing. it doesn't need to look good in order to work well, but I think a little sprucing...
As mentioned above, they fit the Scout 555 which does 50W. The QRP model they work with is the Argo 556.
Neat concept. I have been on the lookout for a good deal on a 555. Saw one with all the modules with it go for about $350 on ebay recently. The modules seem to go for 30-40 each depending...
I have wanted an 817 for a long time. I will be going to Europe for a month this spring so I decided now is the time to get one. But, I got to thinking, it has been around a while and I wonder if there is something on the horizon to replace it. Anyone aware of anything coming along that will...
"Has anyone tried their software on Windows 7? Does it work if you're using Windows in a VM? It should. How quickly does Flex certify their software on the new releases of Windows? These are potentially big issues."
I have run PowerSDR on win7 using the demo files you can download from their...
i've almost talked myself into it...
my vx-8dr shipped yesterday, and i have decided that if i really like what they have done there i will sacrifice some toys to ebay and pick one of these up as well.
if you try hard enough you can rationalize anything :-)
