SDR Dongle Panadapter on a CB?

An Airspy HF+ Discovery is a cheap but exceptional receiver; receives just about as good as any high price tag SDR transceiver on the market... sometimes even better. It has amazing dynamic range, harmonic rejection, preselectors and never gets overloaded in my usage. One of those tucked under...

Upd858 Washington Channel display dark after 29

Ok... nomad, I am in your debt yet again for your steady hand and support. I checked and re-checked for bridges...nothing. I sprayed fiber optic cleaner to blow out any possible corrosion that I could not see that may have formed a bridge....nothing. Finally, I re-traced each individual jumper...

Upd858 Washington Channel display dark after 29

Thanks so much for the reply, nomad. I will try to find a bridge...again. Try as I may I couldn't see anything with my head magnifier. (I'm always attempting procedures that are just beyond my abilities). I will try to blast it with light and maybe desolder carefully. I will report back and...

Upd858 Washington Channel display dark after 29

This is a brain teaser for me. Upd858 President Washington 2 digit 7 segment 16 pin common anode display. The segments were dimming and so I bypassed the ribbon wire and soldered each pin manually. The display was then bright as original and working perfectly up to channel 29...but now both...

    Help with 858 Washington

So, what have I learned? To be patient, LOL. My initial thought that L37 was a big part of the problem was on track, but I lacked the knowledge, experience and therefore, the confidence to "just fix it". I am sure if any of you guys had the radio in front of you, it would have been a quick fix...

    Help with 858 Washington

This was the priceless information and direction my feeble brain needed. Thank you exit13! I cannot thank you enough. This whole ordeal was caused by my inexperience and impatience! WOW. Just, wow. I had "unbroadbanded" it maybe 3 times before and had no output. This time, after looking at the...

    Help with 858 Washington

How awesome is that, man. I don't know what to say other than a big "thank you". Update 1: USB, channel 19, ALC 180 degrees out, mic gain down, carrier balance adjusted to null out needle... Lowest bias reading I can get is around 75-80 mA... One thing I noticed is that it's difficult to null...

    Help with 858 Washington

I will do just that! Thanks again everyone for your patience, time and energy investment in this thread. As I have told 399 and Kopcicle, I deeply appreciate it. I also realize it's an undeserved kindness that I will never be able to repay. I sure picked a challenging radio to cut my teeth on...

    Help with 858 Washington

I didn't get a chance to retry biasing last night. Life happens, but I will get my shaking hands back in there in the coming days and report back. My intuition tells me I'll be unable to get it right. But I'm gonna try!

    Help with 858 Washington

Thanks guys. With the exception of turning down CT7, that was the exact method and procedure I attempted. (It works fine for the new 2166 driver). Mic gain was at zero, with good carrier balance (no needle movement on USB/LSB keyup). I will go back and turn down CT7 and try again. As for L37...

    Help with 858 Washington

I actually did replace VR16 (as well as VR1,2,12,15,8 and one or two others) VR16 is now a 500 ohm. I suppose I could have replaced a bad pot with another bad pot. These things are a bit flimsy sometimes..

    Help with 858 Washington

Well, after re-capping all the electrolytics and cleaning up the underside of L37, the performance is much better. With the 2166 and 1969, wattage is better too; 2watt deadkey on AM swings to about 8 PEP with speech, 5 watts avg. AM audio is that punchy, crisp 858 circuit-clipped, raspy...
