If you are a buyer instead of a builder, put the most money you can into the antenna and get a radio you can live with...
if you like to build things....(most of us no longer actually build radios) then get the best rig you can afford and build your antenna...the real trick to this hobby, like...

I am afraid that CA and any other state can legally restrict anything they want while driving. The issue here is that the courts have already ruled that driving is NOT a right. So, with that in mind, they are not stepping on your rights when they restrict what you can and can not do while...
so, if i understand the op correctly, he sent the antenna back to DX, and they sent him a replacement and he still has extremely poor performance from the diamond model antenna. Did the op get a new duplexer too? He said the duplexer was bad as well.

The older 746 (non-pro) is actually a pretty good radio.
I have the 756 Pro III as my main shack rig, and have icom 7100's in each of my 3 trucks and in my "go box", but I have two of the old 746's, one 728 and one 706MKIIG that I keep out in my "shop". I use those if I am out there tinkering...
I did post that the revelation of the 7610 coming out changes things a bit. I hope that it is a substantial improvement over the 7600 but I do not really anticipate much in that direction as far as the receiver is concerned. I know that I was not all that impressed with the pro III's...

You looking at analog only or want digital as well? Lots of folks use mobile radios for a base, if all they want is vhf/uhf...
I use an icom 910H for my base.
