based on an incomplete work by PE2CJ

1. Power off the FT-991 and connect a dummy load to the HF antenna port

2. Press the [A/B]+[A=B]+[FAST] buttons together and hold them, then press POWER to enter SERVICE MODE

Fiddle with anything other than the following steps at your own risk. Standard disclaimer applies: If you break it, YOU broke it!

3. Rotate the [MULTI] knob clockwise until option 18-02 (AM carrier level) is displayed

4. Write down the original/current value of (AM carrier level) in your owner's manual. (Usually "55")

5. Change the frequency to 14.200MHz by rotating the Main Dial

6. Press the PTT button, note S-meter reading. Release PTT button.

7. Using the [CLAR/VFO-B] knob, reduce the (AM carrier level) by about 15 units by rotating the knob counterclockwise.

8. Press the PTT button, note S-meter reading. Release PTT button.

9. Press and HOLD the [MENU/SETUP] button **for one second** to save the new service menu values.

10. Power OFF the FT-991 and then Power ON the FT-991

11. Record the NEW (AM carrier level) in your owner's manual. (about "40")

12. Enjoy your smooth sounding AM!
