How do you PING yourself?

I was talking to a fellow radio operator and he mentioned being able to transmit and you could see where your signals went world wide and how strong they were. If this is truly possible how is it done?
Or is this guy just yanking my chain?
 

pretty common to do this using the digital modes, PSK REPORTER, CW SKIMMER, ect........... even listening around to the web SDR"s for fone ops.
 
I know what your talking about and there was a post on the Zed about how it worked. I've listened to myself on 40 meters using a web sdr somewhere in MD. Just playing with the eq on my rig and comparing amp on, amp off signal strength. It was interesting but I felt a little odd doing it.

It's called a reverse beacon. It is a method to see where your signal is being heard, but it is limited to CW, and some digital forms of communications. Look it up on Google.
