I want a new CB for my pickup truck. I got a good antenna mounted permanent with 1:1.

Want SSB, decent wattage, variable wattage via front knob, frequency counter (if possible) and RX clarifier. I don't need talk back or roger beeps, but if they're on it then fine.

I like the look of the Galaxy (had a DX-929) but don't like the drift that I hear the SSB models have.

Any other brands??

I used to own a Cobra CB which was really nice but now that they stopped making sideband models..

I could do a 10/11 radio for $240 or so, but want to see what you folks come up with in 'normal' CB.

I would say a Galaxy 959 or 979 since you said variable power and freq counter. After that i would look for a nice Grant xl or lt, or try a new Uniden 980.

I would also recommend the Galaxy 959 or 979. Forget the drift comments. All radios drift until warmed up. The claims about the Galaxy radios are usually because they have more digits in the frequency counters so you can see the changes. The Galaxy 2547 base I use has 6 digits. It's basically a 959 with a built in power supply.

The 979 is a smaller package for tighter spaces. I have that in my mobile and backup at the base. You can get it with or without a frequency meter. The one without has the connector in the back to add one later to lower you initial cost. You will have to cut lands for extra channels with the 979 instead of just wires. Easy. I'm just noting.

I've used the Uniden 980 as my base but not as a mobile. I like dials rather than menus for mobile. I'm more comfortable reaching for a dial rather than a menu. Not a criticism - just a personal choice. It is a good radio.

I've put my frequency counters on many radios from Galaxy to Uniden to Cobra. They all drift until warm up. You just don't see it on the display. Not an issue on AM - only SSB.
