I got a Grundig Satellit 750 for Christmas and was thinking about stringing a long wire antenna around the house. Basically, I was thinking of running speaker wire out of an upstairs window, and then along the west side to the end of the house, then around the full length of the southwest end. This would give me about 60' of antenna with a right angle turn.

Before I climb that ladder, can anyone tell me if this will work? The house is on a wooded lot surrounded by tall trees and I'll never be able to get high enough to top them.

Thanks. Any recommendations for wire type? When I was a kid, I used the old style(?) two lead flat tv antenna wire (do they even use that stuff anymore?). I have a spool of speaker wire, but can get something else if it'll work better.

Help is appreciated. Been years since I last listened to SW regularly, now thinking of sitting for my amateur licenses.

Wire wise you can basically use almost anything laying around. Remember you will need some sort of counterpoise to work the best. BJ posted some good ideas but years ago I used a top strand of an electric fence as a receiving antenna for a day or two.

To answer your question...Yes agree with Binrat...
Speaker wire...spool lamp cord...any type wire...size really does not matter for SWL...telephone wire...what ever you have in supply when it come to simple long wire type...even something laying in the gutters can work well.

If you want to get fancy...these work pretty well for something indoors and table top.

Gary,

I saw this online but wasn't quite sure what it did or if I needed one. As I mentioned above, I haven't played with SW since I was in high school, but now that I'm retired a lot of my old interests are reawakening, which means financially I'm probably in trouble.
