Magnum 1 unusable on 10M

Well every radio being properly aligned should be aligned with the mic gain all the way up on the face. A radio that has to have it's mic gain turned down to operate properly has been improperly aligned. Only someone clueless about the proper operation of the radio would set it up otherwise.

Likewise you set up the radio with the mic you intend to use with it. Then you keep to the same type of mic. You do not set the radio up with the stock mic if you know you are going to run a much hotter mic or a power mic. The mic gain is their so if you are forced to use a hotter mic than you aligned the radio with you can turn it down until you can either get the right mic again for it or properly align the mic you will now use. If it is a power mic you turn the output gain on the mic down to match the way the radio is aligned.

On top of that a power mic along with talk-back and any sort of super swing or NPC-RC is again just a combo for an idiot. It would be like drinking a warm glass of sugary sweet lard at every meal and wondering why your health is slowly declining! The above sorts of combo's always mean squealing, odd modulation patterns with strange flat spots in odd locations at best to insane box cars with solid lines between them. If you add in any sort of electret mic element of any kind it gets worse.

I bet the wider filters that Less uses is part of the problem. If you take the 5khz filter out of a President Lincoln and put in the 3khz filter from a Radio Shack HTX-100 it throughs the USB/LSB freq. offsets off 1khz from what is displayed.

So check the IF filters first off all. Then check the audio filters to see if it is producing a lot of harmonics? On CB AM prob. does not matter but it might well matter every place else and the alignment might be off accordingly. If I remember right these radios do not have adjustable filter traps they are just fixed coils.

I am not thinking any of the above is your problem but seeing how it came from a truck stop tech you might want to cover all the basics and just triple check everything! Lesscomm does some things I think are sketchy at best. Basically I think he builds splatter boxes and some of his freq. expansion boards are not built to last with obvious flaws!
