mosfets have proven to be more durable. all day. i've popped 5 1969 HGs so far trying them over the past couple years, theres a few radios out there in the wild that i worked on that also have them, hoping i won't have to see em again.
so i have done this on radios in the past with a TIP120, and i got some wicked clean swing from it from when i tried this 12 years ago. I have ordered some bigger darlingtons, gonna give it a whirl again because only a few chassis do the TIP120 variable DK gracefully. this is a little more...
just got a courier spartan pll real cheap. thinkin it's gonna get some recap love, but i want to set it up to drive a 1 or 2pill so i'll need to drop that carrier. any tips on that one?
got rid of the 150' run of rg8x into the big pine tree but instead of dropping an arm and a leg on lmr600, i decided to give a folded dipole and 450ohm windowline a try. running a 9:1 3kw balun right behind the radio room. dropping the feed loss from 42% to 5% is HUGE. so no more coax outside...
ffffff. so i just put a new choke, power connector etc on my 29, extensive work incl a rfx has already been done. goofed up and there was a solder bridge, from the pad that recieves the power from the harness to the positive pin of the PA jack. now the modulation transformer gets hot and smokes...
just got into messing with this. i had to build a vox-ptt on perfboard which involves a preamp. its pretty neat, but i see more europeans in the early AM hours than anything. its pretty dead in the evening when i come home from work. anyone on here mess with this?
so i have a few mosfet boxes that I homebuilt. i hooked the single up to the double and ended up getting 300Wpep ssb and 80RMS swingin over 250w on AM using a low drive PC 122 with abt 18w ssb and 3 swingin about 12 AM. theoretically 100W ssb and 60AM from that singlebanger driver is too much...
the 25gtl is slowly crossing the finish line. i'm thinkin it will be posted in the gallery and the thread locked. next one i might either post in gallery, or maybe i'll do another thread to allow you guys (the peanut gallery) to interact with me while it happens again, idk. so in the pile i got...
for the sh1ts and giggles i picked it off the pile and started messing with it. I was gonna recap and do some hotrod mods and leave it as an ugly ratrod, but after I had a safety meeting with my old man this last weekend, the face/bezel got disassembled, sanded the bubbling chrome off the bezel...
so we are allowed to tx between 160-190 khz longwave per part15 regs, so i had an idea to get SSB mode capability there, even though the rules state 1W INPUT to the final, and i will pay for the linearity, i'm going for it. a 27.000mhz local oscillator (raltron 4 pin vxco) feeds a SA602 mixer...
gave it a whirl flatside from the east coast hoping to net more contacts west of the rockies. the gain and radiation pattern is tight so using a geodesics tool and figuring out what local city i have to go broadside to, I got 2 trees picked out and hucked a nylon rope over the branches about 20'...
so there is an intermittent problem that I thought I solved with a recap. but apparently not. im thinking it might be a bad driver but i want to make sure first.
power drops, audio flutters, eventually comes back but about half of it's power output. odd stuff. before it started acting up again...
ok so off of andy's advice that limiter release cap in these rigs get changed on the 29s and it makes the wattage ABSOLUTELY SLAM
but when i try it on the 25, it supresses the modulation bigtime. looking at the schematic im not really seeing a difference in the layout of the 2 limiter sections...
what could be potential causes of this? (other than made in china)
haven't cracked it open yet, was told it was used in the operation of baling hay in VT so it was a former work rig.
scored 10 off of ebay for $14 from a seller 6star
claimed better RF than IRF520
so curiosity got the best of me
the test bed radio is a taiwan cobra 29gtl so here are my findings so far:
a homemade arrangement of EKL layout (470-1n4148 and 3.3k) and the first thing i noticed is low dead key...
got a beautiful 427 on the bench, recap, npc, went well, so i did shott diodes in d7-8 but now the meter doesn't move on RX everything else works mint now. any suggestions on where to look? i am having trouble finding a schematic
got a cosmetically nice 19xs and the stock mic for it. no idea why it's not modulating. eyeballing a schematic and kinda at a loss as to why. radio's gonna have a home in a local jeep
