    new tech test

Capt Kilowatt, sorry but my years of "Study and Learn" are over. Penn State-Mechanical Engineering major and 30 years in the workforce. I'm 59, retired and decided to get a HAM license because I thought it might be "Fun". I passed the technicians test last week and am now waiting for my...

    new tech test

Almanac figures According to my 2010 Almanac there are only 6 million hams in the world. The last 5 years has seen the loss of 50,000 hams. Economy will rout more. Seems to me you would want to encourage more people to become licensed operators before you run out of people to talk to...

    new tech test

That's harsh. How is a guy that didn't grow up in radio supposed to get started? Sounds like you should know the valve lash and dwell settings and know how to set them before you could drive anything with an internal combustion engine. I'd like to be the only one in the world with a...

    Took the Tech. test today!

Now that the test is out of the way the real education starts with listening time to see how the big boys do it. I may be off on the call sign stuff. I remember A,K,N and W from the test as the first letter. What comes after that still eludes me. I used a 1997 book so I never knew what was...

    Took the Tech. test today!

WooHoo I just passed the technicians test!! Took the test in Radford, VA (now to find a good repeater). Easy as pie. Nice bunch of people. I took the VX-8R and they all played with it. Now I wait for the call sign and then off to DMV for my personalized plate. Not bad for an old guy...

    Took the Tech. test today!

I hope to be testing shortly. First I have to find someone nearby that I can ask the 20 or so questions I have written down. Then I need to connect up with the local group that holds the testing. (if there is one). Living 5 miles from a red light is nice, but the scarcity of people up here in...

Wanna become a Ham? Check this...

PASSED Hi, I'm new here. Dave from SW Virginia waiting for back ordered delivery of my VX-8R radio from Universal Radio. So I thought I'd give the test a whirl. Wow, I'm amazed...I passed. I have very little knowledge of HAM Radio and was getting a little HT just to listen and maybe talk in an...
