Not sure about the first part of your question, but I have a Garmin Nuvi 500 and it is very easy to upload custom POIs to the unit. I've used POI Factory with good results.
Moleculo,
In regards to the road vibration you described, have you considered putting a piece of foam rubber on the dash underneath the radio? If the radio was pushed down on the foam it might reduce the amount of vibration. Just a thought...

As far as using any HT as a mobile radio, keep in mind that you will probably need to use an external antenna for anything past a local repeater. A true mobile radio is really the way to go if that is how...
No problem, hopefully that works. I am at work but I'll run some predictions when I get home to see when the ISS will be passing by our area (I see you're on LI and I'm up in the Hudson Valley). You may have your parameters set too high.
As Moleculo said, I would check out SatScape as well...
Milos,
I use Orbitron and am looking at AO-51 as I type this (it's over the Pacific Ocean at the moment). When you're in Orbitron, click on "Load TLE," then select the "amateur" file from the list. AO-51 is in that list. Click the box to the left of AO-51 to view its path and current location.

Yes, it sounds like the DR would be a good choice for you then. I should try some of the APRS functions since I just picked up the GPS module and split my time between Westchester & Fairfield. Let us know how it works!

I would say that it depends on how much you are into APRS. The extra features on the DR don't seem like they are all that much over the standard 8R, but I am not really into APRS, for what it's worth. I wouldn't go for the GR though. As you can see from other posts, the cost doesn't really...
$429 from HRO (vs. $471 for an 8R with the GPS module and adapter). I would like to see a side-by-side comparison review between it and the standard 8R, but I don't think that the price is reasonable.
Any word on MSRP? Last I read in the other post about the GR was in the $440 neighborhood, which is ridiculous for what you don't get. I just ordered the speaker mic/GPS module for my 8R and am very happy with its performance so far. Not sure who they are trying to target with a higher priced...
