For my stereo amplifier in my 2010 I went through the passenger side, way way up in the top corner of the firewall.

I used hamtestonline for the canadian basic, casually putting in 40 hours over a few months and got 98/100.
It's nice because it gives you an explanation of the stuff you get wrong and as you go it starts focusing on your weak areas. But like others said it's not free.
I've had great luck with my Baofeng UV-5R, survived several drops on my tile floor and still ticking.
Regularly get 60km range driving towards repeaters on both VHF/UHF on flat ground, 20-30km driving away in the "hills", and always with great audio reports.
It doesn't have a big brand name...
I run mine barefoot and I've always gotten good audio reports, and it's got one of the best receives of any rig I've ran mobile.
On quiet nights I can often talk to stations that aren't even moving the S-meter.
I've found during a fairly continuous qso it gets warm after 15-20 minutes and tx starts cutting out around 30-40 minutes, haven't found the limit for low power. After cutting out on high, dropping to low power resulted in clean audio again for as long as I could hit the repeater.

I don't think I could ever own a radio without one, that's why I went with the 5r. It get's great audio reports. Tx range is better then rx with the stock antenna though, but it was still good for about 20 miles in good terrain.
Damn I missed mr day after day again! I was busy on 10m, europe and south africa were coming in pretty good.
I haven't had the (dis)pleasure of hearing "day after day after day, the same old thing" in a few years!
