Thank you nomadradio I will tell my friend. It is at a shop right now that told him it was bad so we do not know if 6 or 7 wire. I will probably have to change it out for him but do not really want to I do not like working on that really high voltage stuff unless it is mine. Thanks again sir.
I have a friend that the transformer went out in his Drake L4b amplifier. It has two 3-500z tubes in it. Is there a after market transformer that will work in it? Or does anyone have one? Thanks
I have a Antron 99 and a Imax 2000 hooked up here in Michigan and both work great on 10 and 11 meters plus have weathered the hard winters here with no problems. Best antennas for the money period!!!!
I would go with the Phantom. The 6lq6 tubes are easier to find and it is easier to work on if a big if it will ever need any work. Tune it up correctly and do not drive the snot out of it and it is a great amp. I have 4 of them myself.
I am running a 4 element Gizmotchy beam. It was not expensive and easy to assemble. I am now talking farther then I ever did with my Imax 2000. I have people 35 miles away and on vertical I can hear them talking on a stock radio running no power. I like the Gizmotchy because you can add...
A friend has a Palomar 300 linear amplifier when he plugs it in a recently installed GFI it will trip it so amp will not get power and work. The amplifier has been taken to my home and plugged in a regular outlet and no problem. Is the problem the GFI wiring or is amplifier not wired correctly...
I have 2 D&A triple Stage Phantoms and 1 Dual Stage they are nice amps and I use mine everyday. I find trying to tune a tube amp using a average watt meter a waste of time. Get a meter that reads PEP and it will be a lot easier. Just audio into amp and tune all to highest readings then back...
I picked up a Icom IC-746pro and as I am using the VFO tuner it skips numbers. If I mess with it I can get to channel frequency I want to. I have seen used VFO encoders on ebay would replacing encoder fix my problem??? I also read that these radios do have problems , it is worth the 125 dollars...
LMAO come on down to 11 meters ham operators see how long you will last!!! All I ever see is ham operators complain about CB radio constantly. I have my ham license and 50% of the people I have talked to on 10 meters think they are Gods grace to radio and are just plain rude and it just makes me...
Sorry to disagree but the days of the sweep tube amps are far from over. There are plenty of used tubes out there to keep them going for 50 more years. Keep a eye on ebay prices but do not think that is what you will get locally. Ebay can be a big headache because of the crooks out there and...
357 thank you I will try to check it and watch relays see if i can tell if closing properly. I have it on shelf will be done with old radio I am cleaning up then give it another try. Earlier I made a comment one relay i forgot the antenna relay. sorry guys. This is a really nice old amp and...
Naysayer I put amp back on shelf for a cooling off period for myself and working on old radio right now but I will get amp back off shelf and look at what kind if get any more ideas on what to do. It is a smaller type of relay but with flat style contacts on it. I took them partially apart and...
nomadradio yes that is the picture of bottom of amp and it only has 1 relay. I was just wondering since one contact point out of the 3 is I believe switching the high voltage got that from an earlier comment could I add another relay beside that one and hook it so high voltage goes thru all...
Nomadradio I cannot find a schematic for amp nowhere. The contacts do not look bad to the eyesight. I am sure you are right about it switching high voltage on one set of points. I wonder could i put another 3ptdt relay in it and just have that relay use all 3 contact points to switch the just...
Tubes ok so that was not the problem . The relay looks good and keys like it should but with a nice loud pop and spark every 3 or 4 key up. Beautiful amp any more ideas???????
I went with the Gizmotchy but added another element and made it a 4 element beam and I am so happy with the results. It has been through a Michigan winter with no problems and I seem to talk to anyone I can hear.
Checked blocking disc capacitors and they are ok not sure if I can increase value cannot find any info. I have been suggested to check tubes for a plate voltage short and doing that this weekend. thanks for the replys.
