Cobra 87 GTL questions

I bought an old cobra 87 GTL the other day. .. like new condition in a package deal with a Motorola maxtrac. .. my question is, are these good performers.... and what kind of mods if any can I do to increase performance. Also have a Royce 1-632 ssb cb I am curious about. Any info will help.
