It's a great radio. With the RF Power all the way down, I dead key right around 2 watts. With the RF Power all the way up, I dead key around 11-12 watts. I'm currently running it with a TNT 350 that has been tuned by Crusher and when using the Amp, I set my dead to 3 watts using a MFJ-822...
You might want to rotate the mic gain knob back and forth, and see if that fixes your modulation issues. The President Lincoln II's have this same issue, but it happens randomly.
222DBFL, I did notice that H&Y sells replacement whips for the 5000. I'm just not sure if it is the 3.5mm or the 4mm. They haven't replied to my email (sent like last month). The screen capture I posted above comparing the two versions is from a UK website.

Interesting, I'm not a fan of camouflage, but wonder how the extra 6" length on the whip affects things. I had to cut about 2" off my Sirio 5000PL in order to tune it to 1:1.
BigKahuna... When I first encountered this issue, I also thought it had something to do with running the mic gain on max. I have since been running it backed off to around 95% and the problem resurfaced at random.

I have a Lincoln II v.3 and it's been a great radio. I have been having an intermittent issue with the mic gain. Sometimes when I turn the radio on, and PTT there is no modulation (in other words the radio acts like the mic gain is turned all the way down). I can correct the problem...
