Has anyone ever played around with FRS radios?

Has anyone ever played around with them by scanning through all the channels for a transmission (some will actually do this automatically), then talk to strangers on them?

I've talked to a bunch of kids or teens on them before, and it was hilarious! And do kids actually use these things anymore, or have they been mostly been replaced with cell phones and texting?

I do it all the time unintentionally from the tops of radio towers. It amazes people how far a cheap 300mw radio will go with a straight line of sight. Once I was far away from home on thanksgiving, talked to a lady who invited me to eat with her for thanksgiving, I was going to go until I found out she was 50 miles away!
