Infinite bandwidth, FM & the human voice?

The FCC sets a block of frequencies for certain uses and the bandwidth of the FM Stereo signal is around 250 kHz. Then you have to have 300 kHz separation between stations. So from 108 MHz 107.7 is the next available channel.

Actually maximum deviation in North America on the FM broadcast band is +/- 75 KHz for a bandwidth of 150 KHz. Add in an additional 25 KHz as a guard and you end up with +/- 100 KHz channels hence FM channel assignments in North America are spaced every 200 KHz. Since the first channel has to be 100 KHz from the band edge the lowest channel is 88.1 MHz and with 200 KHz spacing we end up at 88.3, 88.5 etc. FM channel assignments in Europe however are every 100 KHz with maximum deviation of half that in North America and at one time allowed assignments every 50 KHz. That was ended in 1984.
