The 990 is an excellent radio. It's the "poor-mans' " 1000. Very reliable from what I've heard. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one myself. A friend of mine has had one for several years and loves it.

Hook948,

You didn`t by any chance remove an FT 840 to make room for the FT 990. If so and you feel the 840 is suffering from neglect, perhaps I could help. I`ll even pay shipping. Oh hell, I`ll even call you up and let you talk to it every weekend.

Well I've had the FT-990 a couple weeks now and thought I would post a review. The reciever is AWESOME. I sometimes find myself turning down the volume even when the needle is on zero! I thought maybe the meter was out of adjustment so I hooked up the FT-840 on same freq. and needle was on zero also and I didnt hear a thing on the 840, switch back to the 990 and loud and clear. The transmit audio is "good", not great but working on that 90 memories that store freq. and mode are nice and can scan memories also. The adjustable noise blanker,Notch filter,IF shift and adjustable digital hi/lo cut filter really help pull someone out of a pile up. I cringed at spending that much money on a radio but now feel it was money well spent.JMO
