Texas Star 500V amp not putting out....

To it's potential.

I have a Galaxy 44 that on the low end Dead keys @ a hair over 2 watts it was recently tuned by a reputable tech that also sold me the amp, when I followed this recommendation from another forum;

while dx500 will handle what S9 can dish out, turn variable rf output on radio DOWN, turn amp on HIGH, key radio, & adjust variable power on RADIO til amp dead keys 125 or so. it should swing 450 or more

My Dosy 3001 is showing a shade under 200 watts?

It is getting plenty of juice, I have the supply line feeding off the batteries of a Mack tractor.

are you getting 200 watts deadkey or 200 watts pep ?
if its 200 watts pep turn the variable up till it does no more than 500 watts pep . a 125 watt deadkey from it will be optimal .

Thanks, I guess I wasn't very clear...

200 watts PEP is all that I am getting with the variable on the radio turned all the way up.... I am off work through next Thursday, so I won't be able to look at it till then.

I'm thinking that the Texas Star amps model is their rated input power. I have a DX-250 HDV I use with an HTX-100 and am seeing 125 - 150 watts pep out with 13 watts pep drive which is about right. You'll probably see 200 - 250 out on the 500v.

I have a t/s 500v with a galaxy 949 I have my d/k set @ 50-100 watts depending on how much noise is on the channel and it swings to 250-275 on my tc-1000 dosy in my 01 ford f150 stock alt. and batt. when I put it on the deck wide open d/k is 200 watts and swings 450-475 I'm pretty happy with hope this gives you some help.

Can you post what the radio alone is doing both dead key and modulated?
That will tell you drive going into the amp.
Also, is this with "only" the red power button depressed?

Barely over 2 watts, swings to 15

Red and Green on, as I understand the green "Dial a watt" button activates the variable output when it is on.


With the Amp on (Green and red on) it DK's 75, swings to 150

Red button only, DK's 140, swings to 175


FWIW, my Galaxy 44 just received Mosfet finals as an upgrade when I sent it in for a realignment... and had some cold solder repaired...

The readings were taken with a Dosy 3001...

New Amp?
They used to be good about the warranty on the T/S amps.
What are you transmitting into?
This is in the truck hooked to a whip or ??
Make sure you are not getting voltage drop at the Amp, it only takes one troublesome connection to make it sag.

No,
It's not a new amp, but it appears to be in pretty good shape, bought it from a reputable guy that aligned my radio, you would probably recognize his name, he is from Ontario California.

I am using a Wilson trucker 2000 antenna.

I have the amp hooked to a large cable coming off the batteries on the tractor (it is sharing the same line that feeds the liftgate cord receptacle on the back of the cab.)
I will hook it directly to the battery on Monday.

What are you transmitting into?

It sounds to me like you might have a couple of blown transistors. You're going to have to get that thing checked out.

That wasn't really what I wanted to hear, but it doesn't surprise me considering how much head scratching that I have been doing.

I have read some of his earlier post's, and he seems like the go-to guy, but since I just bought the amp I am thinking that I should contact the seller and see if he is willing to take care of it...I did ask him if he had checked it out and he said it was good to go...

And yes, I would go back to The Radio shop and have him check it out while it is installed in the truck if you can.

Unfortunately, that isn't an option..I don't leave the greater phoenix area...
