Just to expand on this, if you really want to SDR properly, but receive only, the offerings from AirSpy are unmatched. I have purchased probably 10 different SDRs over the last 5 years and my AirSpy was the best. They are just a bit expensive for only receiving. And note that many of the SDRs...
For me GQRX and SDRangle are "must haves" but I must admit that I know nothing of Windows options as I don't use it. But I suspect that the main issues with SDR devices on Windows is that the OS wants to use incorrect drivers since it probably thinks the SDR is a TV tuner. If you get beyond that...
You have provided plenty of assistance to myself and others here so don't be shy. I have worked with Linux as a profession since about 1994 and I am happy to help you or anyone else that wants to dive into the wonderful world of cheap SDRs. And even expensive ones. When you have questions just...
I have quite a few SDRs and while you can use them with an Android and a OTG cable it isn't the best way to go. I use Linux for all things SDR but if you are not familiar with Linux getting everything setup can be a bit daunting. One good option is to use a "Live" Linux image like this one...
Awesome. I just downloaded the manual and saw that feature. It is just what I need since I need 4W for off-roading trips with others but otherwise I am just CB'ing for fun with the linear.
I just pulled the trigger on one of these, I will have it tomorrow. Not sure how I am going to cram it into the small space I have but gonna try! Seems like a hell of a radio for $199.
It seems like the manufacturers have paid attention to what little new markets open up and do a fair job. You can find quite a few very small but competent CBs intended for use in off-road trucks and ATVs these days that are just about perfect for the market. I just installed a President Bill II...
I got the SSM-3 from Hustler. Nice spring. Made in Mexico so that's a bonus over China. It feels like it is nearly double the weight of the Firestik 'HD' spring.
Thanks for the tip on the spring. I will have one tomorrow. But I must say that the idea of driving to Portland and whipping random idiots with a swinging fiberglass pole has a lot of appeal.
Tried a simpler experiment. I pulled the nail all the way up and my SWR went up to 1.4 on 40 and was lower on 1 so I guess I got lucky with this antenna. It is a bit long for a 'daily' but since the main reason for CB in that truck is emergencies and farting around it seems perfect.
The cap is fabric so perhaps not a huge block? But it is thick waterproof stuff so I am sure it isn't isn't ideal. I get the higher (but still great) SWR readings with my other antennas that jive with what I measured when I tuned them so I am guessing that this antenna is just an abnormally...
Not a complaint but more of a "this seems unusual" thing.
I just received a 5' Skipshooter to use on our old Tacoma when clearance isn't an issue. I normally run a 4' Firestik. Out of the box with the nail all the way down I get a nearly perfect SWR across all chans. I tested the SWR with...
I am not an expert on this but I have been cutting coax to whatever length I have needed and when terminated with good connectors SWR is very good so send it. Do what you need for your installation then work backwards if SWR is out of range. It isn't rocket surgery when it comes to CB unless you...
I have been running a 4' FireStik 'cus availability and such so I am looking forward to checking out the Skipshooter. I am running a very modest rig so antenna is king. But isn't it always?
And by "truck" I mean a 23 year old Tacoma. Mobile is all I have right now but after being away from CB since the 80's it is plenty fun. My 5' Skipshooter arrives tomorrow. Looking forward to testing it out.
6 can be fun. I hear people in Arkansas and Louisiana all the way up here in NW Oregon like they are next door. As others have mentioned it is pretty good to use it as a beacon to see what's up with the radio weather.
