    I haven't, but I will. Thank you

    Realistic TRC-457 stock, freq issue

I just now used my monitor radio set on USB to find out what frequency the 457 is receiving on and Transmitting on. Both radios set to channel 20 (27.205) and on USB: 457 clarifier centered. 457 receives at 27.20180. 457 transmits at 27.20358. And that's with all the oscillators spot on with...

    Realistic TRC-457 stock, freq issue

Yea, I came to the 7.8025 conclusion myself last night. I figured: USB - 34.9875−27.185 equals 7.8025. AM - 34.985−27.185 equals 7.8 LSB - 34.9825−27.185 equals 7.7975 But all those are spot on with service manual. The 34.9875 tuned in fine. The 34.9850 tuned in fine. The 34.9825 tuned in...

    Why?

Yes, by realigning the RF stage will usually clean it up. Then if I want a little less AMC attack, I will strap a 22k ohm resistor across the AMC timing cap leads. All my radios, after doing the simple swing mod along with the alignment and possibly a 22k across the AMC cap will drive the snot...

    Why?

If I do the npc, then I'd use a 330 ohm resistor along with the diode. But this guy's way of NPC is a 100 ohm and the diode. Yes, I know mostly all these exports have the same board, and mostly the same parts, but I've noticed some of the radios work fine with the NPC, while others didn't, even...

    Why?

LC, I've found that NPC on certain radios will make that passthrough regulator scorching hot, which weakens the regulator eventually. Whereas, the simple swing mod (diode added to existing resistor at the carrier control VR) doesn't make it run hot. They both produce decent quality after...

    Realistic TRC-457 stock, freq issue

Update, not fixed yet though: I have another radio sitting here I've already went through that gave no problems at all. It's the same chassis, President Washington 858. I yanked all the crystals out of both this bad 457 and the Washington. I put all the 457 crystals in the Washington, and all...

    Why?

Yes, I'm gonna charge him. The issue isn't coming from anything I did, it's coming from what he did, therefore it's gonna cost him for me to replace it.

    Why?

May of you may remember a few weeks ago me posting about having a Connex 4800 DXL on the desk. It was sent to me because it was overheating and needed an alignment. Well, after going over it, I noticed they had a swing mod strapped across the passthrough regulator (which in my opinion is a no...

Non techs, stay out of these exports....

Sad, but true Brandon... Great point.

Non techs, stay out of these exports....

Yea, it's getting ridiculous with some of these radios. The worst hackery I've ran across, was a galaxy dx-979 with clarifier control removed, taped off and laid inside the radio. In place of the clarifier control they placed an echo control. I was like "what the heck, what good is a sideband...

Non techs, stay out of these exports....

Got a Galaxy Saturn 6-band version on the desk. Owner picked it up at our local hamfest recently. He paid 350 for it and took it up to the testing area of the hamfest to check it out, only to find out the receive was non-existent, had to crank volume all the way up to hear just a little noise...

    Realistic TRC-457 stock, freq issue

Got all the crystals checked. All are well within range. 7.8025 = flashing back and forth from 7.8024 to 7.8025. 7.7975 = flashing back and forth from 7.7974 to 7.7975. 11.2858 = flashing back and forth from 11.2857 to 11.2858. The other 2 synthesizer crystals do the same, flashing from right...

    Realistic TRC-457 stock, freq issue

Got a Realistic TRC-457 on the desk today. This radio belongs to a long time friend of mine. He uses this radio every once in a while. He wanted me to check it out cause he's noticing some issues as of lately. He wants no mods installed, he wants it stock. Upon evaluation: Transmit frequency is...

Elkin 4 tube any help is definatly appreciated.

The yellow wire solders onto the same rail tap as one of the 110v input lines. The other end of that yellow wire goes to the fuse holder. The cap goes from that same tap (110v and yellow wire tap), over to another tap that is tied to ground through a mounting screw for the rail. Thank you...

Another abused Cobra 2000 brought back...

I don't do this as a business, it's only a hobby for me. Only money I make is for parts, supplies and gas because I pickup and deliver. I'm only helping these guys out until someone else comes along, because their decades old radio/amp tech passed away a year or so ago. I just share with others...

Elkin 4 tube any help is definatly appreciated.

I've seen that video before, but that schematic doesn't show the value of the cap in question. Here is the pic kopcicle posted which shows some of the value of the cap in question. I can see what looks like ?02 and ?kv. I'm assuming it's a .002uf at 1kv, is this correct?

Elkin 4 tube any help is definatly appreciated.

I know this is an old thread, but I have a question pertaining to this same amp. 4-tube elkin, no hi/lo switch, same internally as above pics. In the pic posted a few posts back is a close up of the transistor you all were referencing. Well, under that transistor tab is a disc capacitor with...

This old one is in a mess, can it be saved?

Well, Update: Everything turned out great with the alignment and other stuff. Still no upper sideband transmit at all. I think the mode selector may be cracked in that position. All other repairs ran smoothly, Complete alignment ran smoothly, Receive alignment ran smoothly, All features and...
