no it is the jack for the external speaker without a doubt. On a speaker jack when you plug in an external speaker it will disconnect the internal speaker and play thru the external speaker only. I plugged the external speaker in ( without looking ) and screwed up the jack so the external was...

i am just going to use it without the external jack. The internal speaker works just fine. The other option would be to add a real speaker jack to the metal case and connect it to the speaker wires..easy job.

I decided to keep the Radio and posted it because after opening up the radio and securing the external speaker jack the radio was working and to me worth much more than the money lost selling it. It's a great radio. For the right price I might sell it. There is one on eBay ending today!!

Never had a hum. Is the ANL and or noise blanker on. Very nice radio. Did you get the new DX-979F with the freq counter. From what I see they have discontinued the 979 without.
