Someone tweaking the slugs to try and get 1/2 watt more power with a metal tipped screwdriver will break the slug every time.
A plastic or ceramic screwdriver blade ( I prefer plastic) will usually get that extra 1/2 watt without breaking the slug.

With that budget in mind, a Uniden 980SSB May work for you. I have several of them and my opinion is they are pretty solid and drift free. Lots of folks have complained about the display being hard to read while mobile. I don’t have one mounted mobile but could see the concern. However if you...
Use the larger coax (is it old and weathered?) and ignore the .1 difference. You will never hear the difference neither will anyone who is listening to your transmission.
Is the SWR meter you are using calibrated to a .1 resolution? Tried tuning it with a Nano VNA?

I bought a couple of pull out boards off e-Bay to use repairing mine and one other 440.
Found it was quite economical to get the unobtanium components and a circuit board to use for repairs and have some left overs!

Kenwood TS-440SAT is my daily driver!
I don’t like menus or touch screens. Everybody is different. I just prefer knobs, switches and an analog meter.
Most anything that old will need some love and care. I enjoyed bringing mine back from certain death and a friends back from death!

Sorry Kneebiter. The 90 degree mounting is something I don’t have.
I could turn this example into a 90 degree mount by adding buss wire on one set of contacts?

Take one out of a dead mobile rig.
I have several carcasses with switches. I have been turning these PLL02 Mobile rigs into obscure base models using the dead carcass of the base cabinet to transplant them into but retaining the base station controls and switches.
Let me know what type of...
Crawdad,
I finished it last weekend and haven’t transmitted on it once. I tuned it to resonance at 28.400 with the mast laid over and the reflector about 6’ off the ground. It very usable for all of 10 meters. See Nano
VNA display below.
After raising the mast to full height, I get an SWR of...
Am I wrong in thinking that a mosfet uses current to do its job?
So if you expected a mosfet fed with 10 volts to perform the same job it is expected to do at 14.1 volts, would not the MOSFETS current soar?
What causes a voltage drop from a power supply when a Sweet Sixteen is keyed?
I know I...
Any bets as to how soon the inquiries will start asking-“Where is the power VR? Where is the Mod VR? How can I get 450 watts out of this radio?”
My guess 90 days to 6 months.

The 1.3 drop in DC voltage increases the amp draw of every component that gets voltage inside the chassis.
Increasing amperage causes increased heat in components.
Heat and circuit board components equates to bad “JUJU”.
Lower heat equates to longer lasting components and longer lasting...
I only stretch the coils to max output, then squeeze them back until I see a 5 watt drop in output.
That gives the audio some much needed headroom.:unsure:
I’m not kidding either!

Transitioned to a Management position with my company. I swore 10 years ago I would never have a management position again-my body says otherwise now.

@Smokinone I built 2 of the samplers you linked to in your 1st post in this thread by Don Jackson. They are solid performers and cheap to build.
I ran the SB220 through it that I rebuilt for a friend a couple years ago into my SA with no worries. It is indeed a -53dbm sample of the output as...
