    Death of a Crossbow (antenna)

Correct on the reverse threads. I've never run anything but legal CB power limits, but I do remember a licensed ham friend of mine telling me he wouldn't run over 25 watts into the Big Sticks. I also had a Shakespeare 176-1 marine Big Stick. It last about 20 years before it buckled at the...

    Death of a Crossbow (antenna)

The best antenna I have ever used was the old Radio Shack .64 ground plane omni. It was a fantastic performer and I had upgraded everything I could on it (screws, nuts, washers, clamps, etc.) to stainless steel. Unfortunately, it met a premature death when it got hit by lightning. Radio Shack...

    Couple of Oldies

It is good to be lucky. A few years ago, my next door neighbor found his old Johnson 4740 SSB rig, one of the first 40 channel SSB rigs, in his garage. The conversation went like this. Neighbor: "I'm not using this. You want it?" I ran with that radio until it died.

Thank you, my friend. I'm in Miami today so I'm running my 42 year old Realistic Navaho TRC 490 with an even older Turner Super Side Kick driving my Workman "6 Hub" Starduster clone. The base of the antenna (the hub) is just 21' off of the ground so the tip of the 102" fiberglass whip serving...

26 came booming in down here. I got to QSO with him around 2:12 P.M. eastern. Great sounding station. I understood him to say that he was in Iowa but right near the Missouri River.

Don't let the HOA violate your 1st Amendment right to put up a flag. Just because your RF neutral, non-conductive fiberglass flag pole has a 102" whip on the inside doesn't change the fact that it is still a flag pole.

@561...you've been the most consistent of the stations I've heard today. The challenge has been getting over the noise floor. It is riding right around 3 "S" units and you've been coming in just a hair over it. If you had a base or maybe a 102" whip on the mobile we probably could have talked...

26 in Iowa was booming in as he carried on a QSO with 917 in Pasadena, CA. The strength of the signals was bouncing around a bit, but their conversation was making it here to So. Florida.

I'm hearing Nebraska to Delaware as 134 carries on his QSO with 808. At the same time, I'm hearing St. Louis, Missouri to Pasadena, California as 561 reaches out to 917. The two conversations are going on at the same time, but they don't seem to be aware of each other.

You were making an excellent trip this way a few minutes ago. No other station was coming in anywhere near as strong. I was in the lower Keys yesterday (Uniden Bearcat 980 driving an A99) but am in Miami today (Realistic TRC 490 with Turner Super Side kick driving a Starduster clone)...

134 was making solid trip down here to Miami, FL just now around 12:30, but he definitely could not here me. I tried, but 12 watts will gets me so far. Around the same time I could hear someone using WDX and I could make out 61, but I could barely pull them out...not enough to count, but...

I've got the radio on as I takes care of other matters. It has been turned on LSB 16 since 9:58A.M. and no SSB traffic whatsoever has been heard. I've called out a few times and not received any response. 16 LSB has been absolutely dead! A few AM operators were on the channel for about 15...

We start at 10:00A.M. eastern tomorrow. Despite less than optimal conditions, I logged 12 contacts with 8 different stations over just over two (2) hours of actual time spent monitoring. For a totally barefoot rig, I'll take it. Looking forward to tomorrow and seeing if we can all expand our...

SUNDAY, MARCH 19th NET BEGINS AT 10:00A.M. We are trying something different tomorrow in an attempt to expand our universe of potential contacts. The Lake Eerie SSB Radio Club does an LSB 16 net Sunday mornings from 10:00A.M. to 11:00A.M. Getting our WDX crew out here at 10:00A.M. should...

I've got a "new-in-the-box" TRC 465 sitting in the closet. It is about to get a permanent home in my SUV. The PC-122/TRC 465 is one solid performing line of radios.

I'm getting out all the way up there on just a barefoot rig? Alright! The Uniden PC-122 in my banner died on me this morning. I'm pretty sure the PLL went due south. I started losing some channels and then all of the sudden I had no channels at all. The unit was 30+ years old, so I really...

Quite a few contacts made this morning and early afternoon including 163, 630, 134, 659 and 953. I'm also hearing 134 contacting stations in NC and VA. There is definitely activity and the afternoon is still young.

    MARCH MADNESS

Big Miami Hurricanes fan here. The Canes have not been playing their best ball lately, but they did enough to win. Now, if they could just do this four more times!
