DX was strong into Colombia yesterday late morning thru early afternoon. East Coast, West Coast, Canada, Europe all booming in.
Then something strange happened. As I was having a QSO with 3808 Northern Cal, my receive started fluctuating wildly. His signal was going back and forth rapidly from...
Go ahead and build the mod and install the pot temporarily. Fire it up and adjust the pot for whatever dead key you want. Measure the resistance of the pot and sub in the closest fixed value resistor.
I avoid 38LSB like the plague. 37LSB is where I usually hang out. But when the clowns get there I'll move to 36LSB or 39LSB or where ever Is clown-free. There's always some one to QSO with on every channel.

It's 9:30 AM EST. Gonna hit the shack and check the DX Propagation. If it's good I will be on the air until it dies out. Then gonna tear the statiion down and install the SDR setup in the 139XLR. Hope it works OK.

Didn't get a chance to get on the air today. I had to drive to the Med to pick up my new amp and the final pieces for my SDR setup. Can't wait to try both of them.

DX was dead today. I tried calling CQ-DX, but the stations that answered my call were totally in the mud. I was monitoring from 1:30pm until 6pm. NADA ! At least I got to work on my SDR and DSP setups.

I have a BACKWOODS RF freq counter for TRC-457 radio. I need the connection info. I believe the counter input goes to the VCO output, but not certain. Ralph made some fine gear before he passed.

Drove to the Med yesterday to buy some shelving, and new tires for my riding mover. Sears doesn't specify a size on their tires. I guess to force customers to buy from them. I wanted rear tires with an agressive thread so the tires wouldn't spin when going up the steep hills around the farm. I...
DX was sporadic today. From noon until about 3pm, it was pretty good. After 3pm it was dead until about 4pm, when I got tired of listening to static and called "CQ-Dx."
Got a few comebacks, but not the usual hornet's nest. Just a few LOUD stations that were almost pegging my "S" meter. When i...
Coyote -
I heard you off and on coming over the pile. I waited til it quieted down and gave you a call. Don't know if you heard me because a hornet's nest of statons jumped in calling me. But just to let you know you were making the trip and sounding good.
Finally hooked up with Larry, DXMan...
UPDATE: Problem solved !!
I opened up my 139XLR and removed R113. When I measured its value I found it to be 68.1 ohms. I replaced it with the 150 Ohm R113 that I removed from an 858SSb parts board, and now C101 is cool as a cucumber.
Evidentally this was a running production change that...

That is the right place. Funny thing though, The sams for the Cobra 138 and139 xlr are the only 858SSb chassis that show a 68 ohm resistor for R113. All the other chassis I checked (Realistics, Robyn, President, Teaberry) all show a 150 ohm resistor in the R113 location. Maybe the 150...
Got on at 2:30 in the PM. Lots of DX from all over. At 5pm I could still hear a lot of stations, but no one could hear me. Tried again after 7pm, and same result. I could hear, but wasn't getting out to anybody. Peanut whistle station in the evening for the past 3 days. :( :(

Cap is definitely not backwards, and the board is not mismarked. The negative lead of the cap is connected to the ground trace.
BC, I hadn't thought about the 150 ohm wirewound being shorted. A carbon resistor can't short, but a wirewound sure could. I pulled a 150 ohm WW resistor out of an...
Cap checked good, but changed it to a higher voltage rating. Checked on my scope, and power supply is clean w/o ripple. Tried it with a battery and cap still heats up. There are three other Zener regulated voltage taps, and none of the caps on them get hot.

The AC power supply in my Cobra 139XLR has several zener-regulated DC taps that feed voltages to various portions of the circuit. The 100uf cap in the circuit shown below gets EXTREMELY hot. All of the components in the circuit checked good, but I replaced them with the same values only higher...
Excellent day for Dxing. After getting all of our animals fed, I got on the air at 11 AM. 37 LSB was rocking and I made one contact after another. Highlight of the day was my first contact with BC Coyote in British Columbia. Called for WDX stations off and on all day but no luck. Maybe better...
Great to finally QSO with you Coyote ! Your station was hitting me 5-7 on my stingy meter. I was pointed North and I heard 23 British Columbia come out of the pile. Swung the antenna in your direction and "presto", loud and clear. Like you said, Supurb hookup especially considering the distance...
