The reason echo is not on HF rigs is that most of them employ some sort of digital processing to enhance their broadcast audio. Digital is way better, but it's pricey and it's one of the reasons that HF rigs are so expensive. So-called "chicken band" radios use echo because it's cheap and...
Forgot to disconnect the antenna, so went own to the shack about 9:30. Fired up the Rig and swung the antenna to the Southwest and talked with Tom 4WR001 in New Zealand. Nice 10 minute QSO. Then caught Victor Mike 00 also out of new Zealand for a short hookup. They said I was hitting them with...
Everything was dead today. Nothing but static. Then I heard 605 out of South Texas come booming in on 27.385 lsb. Never said what kind of radio he was running, but said he was doing 300 watts into a 5-element Gizmotchy on the flat side. When we got our antennas pointed at each other solid 5-7...
When we lived in Georgia, my son and 2 of his friends were going 4-wheeling in the mountains one weekend. I hooked them up with some old Midland CBs and mag mount antennas I had. They said that they probably wouldn't use them much.
When they got back, the first thing my son did was ask if they...
I don't talk about age . . . it makes me feel old. As long as everything inside still works OK - I'm good. I've operated stations in Indiana, SoCal, Wisconsin, Georgia, and now Colombia. Started in '66, and never been in a home without a CB antenna up. I guess I'm just a diehard. Bought a...
Back in my Boy Scout days, I remembered our Scoutmaster always lighting a fire with a piece of steel and some flint. Strike the steel against the flint and send the sparks into a wad of drier lint. Immediate fire. Saved a big hunk of lint from our dryer in a Ziploc bag. KEEP IT DRY. Old school...
No dx for me yesterday. Spent 5 1/2 hours in the Dentist's chair , followed by a 2 1/2 hour drive home in a blinding rainstorm on twisty mountain roads. Implants are no fun.

BC-
I'll try. I don't often hear skip from West Canada, and was surprised when I heard it today. I will try again tomorrow, probably late afternoon (4-5pm EST). Love to hook up with you.

Channel 37 Dx was crazy different today. 15 minutes of total silence followed by 15 minutes of skip so loud that I had to pull the headphones off. This way all day and into the night. During those in-between times had some great QSOs with stations in New York City, Oklahoma, Massachusetts...
In my experience a slight bit of echo added to the audio signal increases the perceived loudness at the receive end. This is because the listener, in effect, hears everything twice.

Heard 226 Texas calling CQ . I answered and he came back. But the channel was too jammed up for us to hold a good conversation. I said I'd stand by until things quieted down. As if by magic a couple of minutes later it was quiet and we hooked up again. I asked him where he was and he said San...
