That's total BS. Even when conditions are booming, if I find a clear frequency my noise level is less than 1 S unit. Same noise level I have when there's no conditions at all.
Propagation doesn't increase the noise level by itself.................
Wow that's cheap ! Up here it's over a $300 Canadian ticket plus you get demerit points on your license that add up to almost another $1000 over a period of time (insurance costs more with the demerit points).
$50 fine seems like almost no deterrent at all !
We do have exemptions for two way...
Oof! I had forgotten about that. Not fun to listen to at all !
Both the 949 and 959 were very popular radios for a time, I remember lots of folks having them.
Galaxy radios are a Ranger product, and Friends don't let friends buy Ranger products.
Totally agree with sp5it about the noisy receiver, though it's not the worst one out there. Some of them drift like a rudderless boat on SSB, others aren't so bad once they warm up. And the frequency...
Yes I noticed that was gone. Also haven't heard any of the 11111 guys for a while now either. Conditions have been spotty lately so it's possible they are still on the air but I'm just not hearing them.
Has anyone else heard the crying baby on 38 though ? That seems to be a new 24 hour a day...
Good Grief. This is a prime example of what is known as a "First World Problem".
There are wars all over the world, kids going hungry, political and social upheavals everywhere, and you're getting your knickers in a knot over POTA ?!?!
Give your head a shake.
This. We've had at least a couple people on the forum here who bricked these types of radios from going into the service menu and messing around.
These radios work perfectly out of the box; no need to go into the service menu at all !
I keep a box of old defunct radio circuit boards under my bench for moments just like this.........
'cause it's a hassle to buy just one ferrite bead. Usually you have to order a minimum amount, you then use one and lose or misplace the rest before you ever need one again.
Those two radios are about the best bang for your buck your going to find these days as far as new equipment goes!
If you're looking for new tech in an old school package with knobs check out the Anytone Ares-2 (also sold as the Radioddity QT-40). It looks like an old school Cobra but with tons...
Wow. Only 60 feet. There must be thousands and thousands of towers in use that are taller than that. I'm guessing there isn't much enforcement ?
Surprising that Canada has fewer restrictions around towers than the U.S. !!
I've known a number of 11 meter operators up here that have had 100 to...
I had no idea there was a height limit on towers down there in the U.S. !! I wonder if that is still an actual rule or if it has been done away with ?
Up here in Canada there is no limit on height, and radio towers are considered a federal matter, which means that if you are a licensed radio...
I would heartily agree. Ranger radios do not age well. Get a 6666 or a 5555N2. Won't break the bank, works out of the box, and does everything the 2950 does and more......
Way too high of a price. As others said above, you should be able to find one for free no problem. I've NEVER paid for a tower.......I've been gifted 100 footers more than once in my life.
Channel 9's usefulness for emergencies ended in the 1990's. That was over 30 years ago now. Time to move on.
Channel 9 will never be an emergency channel again, and is now defacto one of several Latin American superbowl channels.
