I have a few of these, and the older generations of them as well. They are amazing fun, DX can be had with a whip antenna, however the SSB performance is very average (especially on the "newer" generation radios). They are all dated and compromised designs.
We really need a "new school"...
If you want a handheld with AM/FM/SSB (like a heap of us do) then I suggest sending an email to Anytone/Qixiang to let them know. They are interested, and could do with more market feedback to make it a reality. Let them know guys!

The first thing I do on all of my HF radios and CB's, is align the S9 value back to -73dBm. I will never understand why a large part of the CB radio world wants to see -67dBm. But to each their own.
Here is a good reference for anyone that is interested...
They have had my list for well over a year. Good to see they are getting similar input from multiple people. As for some of the things you say require hardware, don't be so sure! There are some tricks available on this PCB that can be leveraged in software alone (user FM Dev (not W/N RX filters)...
My wishlist:
Firmware:
-No VFO / CH change muting
-Expanded WX band 140-170MHz
-CTCSS tone frequency display, not CTCSS number) - e.g. show "118.8hz" rather than "16")
-2K / 4K FM deviation menu options
-TX and RX BPF settings. Allow upper and lower passband filter adjustments in main menu...
FYI, The latest IJV firmware for the Quansheng UV-K5 series handhelds, supports DSB RX and TX. It is a lot of fun checking into 2m SSB (USB) nets on a $30 HT. It works surprisingly well. 2m SSB is pretty popular here in VK land, so it's actually useful. (DSB to SSB "cross-mode" QSO's work...
Interesting, and all good on the RX. I wouldn't trust that old modulation meter though! (I think many old-school modulation meters would be better named "distortion meters"!)
Out of the box, the QT40 is between 80-90% AM modulation, and 100% is achievable with alignment (see my post up the page...
When you say "outperforming in every way", do you mean specifically the power output, and AM modulation percentage? Because that is the only two things that the 6666 has over the ARES2/QT40, in terms of "performance" that I have measured in all my testing. I know, those two things matter a lot...
100% agree Mike. I have a MFJ-264 and the build quality is actually very good - I got lucky with mine, it looks nice and flat on a VNA up to 500MHz as well (650MHz as quoted is not so good). But I do consider this as a "good" 100W load, that can handle small amounts of higher PEP, up to 500W for...
Run it stock - don't attempt to change anything in the service/alignment menus without the required test equipment. For now, just set the Mic Gain to your preference and I'm sure will be very happy with this radio, straight out of the box. The settings work the same whether it is expanded, or...
I happened to be playing with an ARES 2 today, so I thought I would take a few pics of the typical results on AM, to show what you should expect to see after a good alignment. (Note: NPC OFF).
At 101.3% measured, if I'm being picky, there is just the slightest bit of positive peak slanting...
Only a tad over 100% modulation is possible without distortion on the ARES 2. You must make sure that NPC is OFF if you are trying to align for a clean 100%. With NPC ON, a lot of the service modulation adjustments seem to be bypassed, or they behave very strangely. (FYI, more microphone...
For that item, you are lucky as it has a default value of 00250. Most other items do not have a default value. Be careful, and it goes without saying to keep out if you don't have the required test equipment!
FYI, for this item, 00250 relates to approximately 2.5kHz of FM deviation. As a...
Step 1 is get more reports for other people. The 7900V at those settings would normally be very clean. (It might be the local station with an RX problem).
This is another firmware thing... Does your radio have a 5kHz step option in the menu? If not, it is an older version of firmware. Because CRT are jerks, they will not release the firmware update - you will have to return the radio to them, (or maybe a dealer) to have it updated if you want the...
I got my Tiny SA's from the official seller on AliExpress called "Zeenko Store".
If you are interested in a SA for other things as well, and you can justify the purchase, the "TinySA Ultra" is the one to have.
Regarding 7900 software versions, you will need to use the correct version of...
