I bet with a little amp like a RM Italy 203 behind that radio you would have much better luck. It's difficult to compete with a base station running hundreds, if not a couple thousands watts, with a barefoot mobile.

I will recommend one that was recommended to me. A kenwood Kes-5. It is built like a rock and gets plenty loud. It is not amplified. I use it in my pickup and it gets over the noise from my exhaust with no problem.
