I have seen way too many problems with the 503 over driving that single driver transistor and I am not even sure that driver is particularly linear. The 503 would be a lot better had they had just dropped...
The Magnum 257's are made in the philipines and are also sold in Europe under the Albrecht label and downunder as the dragon 485.

I have found the FET that RM is using is a little better than the IRF 520 that frequently gets substituted when the RM3 gets overdriven and dies. RM file off the markings so hard to know exactly what the RM3 really is.
If you don't turn the SWR protection off or set it high it has a tendency to kick in all by itself ....All these radios the same. Turn it off and rely on a proper meter to check the antenna.
You can't toggle between 40ch with the channel number showing and full coverage mode on the Optima MK 3 without adding a switch somewhere and some wiring. Full coverage covers all the 40ch CB band in 5khz steps showing the frequency. Just use some of the 5 memories to store the CB frequencies...
It is well protected so just increase the input power till you get your 500W on 20.
It wont to that on the higher bands and you will be lucky to get 200w out of it on 10m
it should be good for 80w input.
If you can get past the strange faceplate of the magnum 1 staring at you then you should have no troubles with the Mag 1. I think it has the best receive characteristics of any CB radio out there right now. Much easier to listen to and no AGC woes that all the Anyclones suffer from.
