My truck had symptoms of common mode current with short coax. I “hid” the symptoms with longer coax until adding ferrite to the feed point (under puck mount).
This was the first time I ever ran into this - I had always cut the coax to the length needed, which was universally less than 18’.
If...
Doesn’t take much drive at all to hit 100 amps. This is only 30-35 watts input.
Cant run my phone’s tone gen app while videoing, so all I have is my crappy whistle.
Lots of them and many much bigger have been run in bases. Some of the “power supplies” I’ve seen were pretty janky, however.
Truth be told, if I wanted that much in a base I’d be running tubes.
I also have a big Dell power supply I picked up for a song. They do seem to be getting much harder...
I believe my first was a pocket-size Realistic about like (or maybe the same as) a Uniden 510. Found a Superstar 121 at a pawn shop very shortly thereafter, and ran it for quite a long time.
Small update...
Finally got around to installing some ferrite at the antenna feed point. I knew I had some common mode issues to deal with, and I hoped that would work. Still not sure that 5 beads is enough, but I went with 1/2” 31 mix from Palomar Engineering. Squeezing them into the...
I saw a lot of these in the 1990s and I would opine that there was essentially zero effect.
That’s referring to the latter type: short radials on the hot side.
Mine is on the roof, Mudfoot. I tie to the bed.
I have done a number of through-the-body installs over the years. Haven’t ever had an issue with rust. My son is driving my 2005 dodge with roof mount. 15 years and no leaks and no rust.
We did have to replace the coax a couple months ago...
I’ve been tying mine down with 20lb fishing line (breakaway). Lately, I haven’t even bothered raising it for DX. I just leave it tied down and seems to work good.
It seems to me these trimmers can get a little funky at the bottom end of their range...could be just me, but it’s sure seemed that way at times.
The 464/465 will put you more towards the middle of the range.
@The20poundhammer,
“20lb hammer“ must stand for the S9+20db you put on me today... :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Surprise contact for sure. Congrats for all your excellent DX work.
73 and all the best!
Dan
@Louisiana Mudd,
A “cluster“ is a website where operators log their contacts. A “spot” is a log entry, either a station contacted (wkd), or a station heard (SWL).
With the cluster you get real time data on propagation and active frequencies, even a map of contacts, if you wish..as well as a...
Saw a bunch of your spots on the cluster...looks like you had a great morning!
Prop has been good with Europe from here for a couple weeks now.
For me today all the SpE and QRM keeping me out of business, lol.
