Radio requires 13.8 volts, I only have a 12 volt battery system

Interesting stuff. Can’t comment much on the device, except to say I would be inclined to overshoot my requirement by a lot. Running a 24v system over your same 10 gauge conductors, now shortened to 40’, would give a substantially lower voltage drop by percentage...but that would only input to...

Radio requires 13.8 volts, I only have a 12 volt battery system

I'm sorry, but I don't know enough about DC-DC converters to be of assistance with that question. Maybe CK, Six-shooter or others will pop in and advise.

Radio requires 13.8 volts, I only have a 12 volt battery system

Just running the numbers again in my head...I was wrong that you’re starting below the req’d voltage. But...you’re right on top of it and that’s with open circuit voltage, topped off batteries, and no load. It’s entirely possible that this rig won’t run with the batteries right next to it, or...

Radio requires 13.8 volts, I only have a 12 volt battery system

Just one other note. 24VDC isn’t going to provide you anything useful as far as appliances. True, some things can run on DC...but generally not 24 volts. But even if you did run DC to appliances and etc, the switches, relays and etc would not be happy with you. The most realistic way to...

Radio requires 13.8 volts, I only have a 12 volt battery system

Yes...I went with 5 amps conservatively, which would give about a volt drop. Still too much. I agree with CK.

Radio requires 13.8 volts, I only have a 12 volt battery system

The voltage drop will depend on the current demands of your rig. I don't know anything about ft8...but its near constant current, isn't it? I can only guess what your radio is using, but if the ampere draw at that output level is near 5 amps, you would easily have a voltage drop that would put...

    Center loaded mobile antennas ?

27.025AM can be a good early indicator of a band opening. So I do watch for Europe SWL spots of that frequency. But...there’s so much power involved with .025 that it doesn’t always mean much for the rest of us. 27.385 LSB is the US’s most popular 11M SSB frequency, and because it typically...

    Center loaded mobile antennas ?

You can always check 27.385 LSB for propagation. Probably a better indicator than 27.025AM. If you hear chatter on 385, then try 375, 395....and so on.

    Center loaded mobile antennas ?

Actually, it’s been off and on from mid May through now. I believe this is multihop sporadic E, so unrelated to the solar cycle and actually a good time of year. I don’t know that for fact, though...I’m really just learning.

    Center loaded mobile antennas ?

There are several stations working 2TB131 on 27.540 at the moment. Reporting him S9.

    Center loaded mobile antennas ?

There’s actually some prop between 2 and 26 Div now. Mostly to the Northern US states, but I can hear some low voices. I’m not sure on one way propagation, but I have felt the same at times. For the most part I can work anyone I hear, and my ability to RX in the mobile is the more limiting...

    Center loaded mobile antennas ?

I can definitely understand that. Length is a factor that most people have to deal with...and I do also. I tie my whip down to about 6’ for driving around, but have a clip so I can easily right it for DXing. It’s not a perfect solution, but still easier than climbing into the bed and...

    Center loaded mobile antennas ?

I don’t have any technical advice to offer on the subject, but I have worked DX with base load, center load and top load antennas (but probably more center loads than anything). The most popular antennas in the US are of all three varieties. I certainly would not agree with the reputation...

    11 meter is very quiet?

It’s auto generated from my log and I generally don’t log US contacts. However, I agree. I haven’t heard anything from the West Coast in a while.

    11 meter is very quiet?

There's been some propagation from Europe to your area for sure but it's few and far between; feast or famine. As far as the antenna...sure, always better. But....I worked those on the map from my mobile, so anything is possible.

Can i mix an hg with a dei?

I’ve mentioned a few times on the board that I don’t think Texasstar matches transistors. No one wants to bite, lol. Just kidding, (but your thoughts on that would be welcome). Anyway, he could pull the other and test it, and the seek a replacement with a comparable value. Been done here...

    11 meter is very quiet?

Jeez-Louise! Never thought I'd see the day...the 11 meter thread has fallen to PAGE TWO. No posts in more than a week!!! Get motivated folks....here's a map of some contacts over the past couple months....the DX is out there!!

Mobile Rigs - Static, interference, and thoughts on these issues...

Yes, obviously not skywave propagation. I still don't think it tells us anything. When I first started in the hobby, having no clue and a legal 4 watt radio and pretty short magnet mount antenna....I used to sit in the evenings and talk to all the locals in the next town on AM. Always...

Can i mix an hg with a dei?

Maybe you could try a want ad here for a DEI? There’s got to be some floating around out there.
