Hi Everyone,
So I made a slight change to my process in that I added a bench radio (Ham) to assist with the overall results. The ham radio (AM, USB and LSB) is dead on (TX and RX) as verified by on air testing.
I am working on a Uniden Grant XL recapped, no mods and all functions work. The...
There is an AM group in my area and I have cleaned up and aligned a few TRC-452 (858 PLL) radios for some of the users and they are VERY good and basic radios. They are also very inexpensive compared to others. Also, I have not been given one that has been modified. It's been kinda nice...
Thanks for your reply 399!! I could have been clearer. The complaint was SSB low receive. During the alignment when injecting a signal (-110db) on 19 USB and adjusting VR2 it has no effect. When I have the radio hooked up to the antenna and listen to someone on LSB in the distance VR2 has no...
As a closeout to this post the radio is now working. After another bout with Covid and a tough recovery I finally spent some time at the bench and I found a problem with the L124 coil that I rewound and 1 other coil. The glue sure did cause a problem initally. The solution for me was to get a...
Hi Everyone,
On the bench is a 2 button Washington with low receive. I did a recap and alignment and the receive is still low. During the alignment when setting the RF Gain Range (VR2) had no effect on the receive volume when turning it lock to lock. As an example for low receive, when I...
Back around 1981 I purchased my 1st CB. It was a lightly used Telsat 140. The previous CB's I had were given to me. I think because it was my 1st one by choice I developed a love for the Lafayette radios. I purchaed a box lot of radios 3 years ago and in it was the Telsat 120. I had never...
I think the rarest CB I own is a Lafayette Telsat SSB 120. It's the mobile version of the Telsat SSB 140 but VERY different in terms of features. It's in near mint condition.
In the D104 manual (see attached) it suggests installing that resistor in cases where the gain from the mic is too hot. The best use of the mic amp circuit is to have the gain of the mic about 1/2 way up so you can benifit from its equal amplification within its frequency range. I have seen...
Hi Everyone,
I have an HR2510 that belongs to a radio guy in my area. The complaint was that it was working and then...it wasn't. When I opened it up Cap C-119 had blown open. It looked like carpet fibers were sticking out of the top of it. I did a complete recap (not the easiest radio to...
Hi There,
I am wondering if the same cord that goes into the GE-3-5825B would work. I would call Kens Electronics. He has a LOT of cords.
This is for the 5825B from his site:
CEA-CBH2C with 4A fuse fits Colt 485, 1200; GE 3-5817A, 3-5825B, 3-5826A SSB CB's
Great question!!! The volume of the crackle is not affected by the volume control. In fact, if the volume control is at its lowest level the crackle comes through loud and clear.
Hi Everyone,
I have a mint Stalker XX (US version) that has been recapped and aligned. The radio performs great!!! It has developed an interesting issue though. When the radio is warmed up (about 15 minutes or so) I randomly get a crackle or pop from the speaker. It is not in conjunction...
Brandon,
I will say this.....I feel as strongly as you do about the knuckleheads that get on the radio and do the worst things and ruin the use of the bands for the rest of us. If it was someone local to my radio community it would be handled. I'm not saying that some sort of violence would...
I researched this the other night for about a half hour. I could not find anything. I re-capped and aligned a 3600 last summer. It was an interesting radio but it was not that impressive performance wise.
Follow what Nomad suggested. He is on to something here.
As far as "too hot" goes what I meant is that sometimes (many times) people modify their radio for more power and end up making it worse. You will often see a radio be too sensitive to audio/modulation or it will become so misaligned...
I agree with Lou on this one but it is interesting that it does not have the same issue on USB. On that board there is a VR that is for carrier balance. In other words, in SSB, when you key the mic this adjustment is made to minimize the carrier which hopefully should be 0 watts. Because you...
Ok, so I just ordered a spool of copper and red 30 gauge magnet wire. I now need a bionic eye to see the coil well enough to wind it. I'll report back in a week or so once the wire gets here.
Thanks for all of your help!!
