I have to agree with 999. If you expect to get the right results from your amp AND minimize the risk of damaging it you really should wait until you can lower the SWR's. Especially with that much power.
They gave you the size of the screws here. I usually go to our local True Value Hardware get what I need. I usually buy the stainless steel screws and washers but I like that look.
Good Luck.
Hi Everyone,
I'll make this as short as possible as I have some grandkids to play with..
A little over 2 years ago I picked up a 1st edition (2 button) President Washington very cheap as it did not work. The reason I got it was because it was in VERY good shape. As is with most of these...
Thanks everyone!! I ready do appreciate all of your thoughts!! I use an HP 5335A as my counter and the input sensitivity is 25mV so its plenty sensitive for "normal" adjustments. The gate time is plenty fast as well. I just had it calibrated so I feel good about its use at this point. I...
Hi Everyone,
A local on air guy brought his D201A by for me to check out. This is the 1st tube radio on the bench.... Mikes Radio did a restoration on it 3 years ago.
The owner said that he hooked up an amp to the radio and at one point turned on the pre-amp. When he did, the receive dropped...
That has the Uniden 858 board in it. A 13 watt carrier is way too high if that is an accurate reading. It really needs a full alignment but there are 2 main points to address here. Adjust VR-8 for no more than a 4 watt carrier (on AM and no modulation) as read on an accurate external meter...
Hi Everyone,
I hope you all are doing ok. I have lost a few in my community recently to Covid so it makes me realize that we are not over this yet. Please take good care!!!!
So, on the bench is an RCI 2950 1st edition. Orange display and the EPT 295012Z board. To start, the radio had been...
Something like this one would be a great start and its calibrated. I know this seller and he is good.

Bama,
One thing that I did not see get addressed here is the actual frequency you are asking about and why a 6 digit freq counter can only help to a point. When you ask about 38lsb and reference 27.385 (or 27.384) the actual complete frequency is 27.385,000. I struggled with this when I began...
IT IS FINISHED!!!!!
No, I did not finish it with a bat or gun....
Thanks to everyone that gave me input and some time just troubleshooting this I now understand what was going on but not necessarily why.
I began by just taking basic measurements of the regulator circuit. I could not seem to...
Can you tell me the value of R249? Now that I see what is in your radio I am not so sure mine was wrong. Also a pic of the driver/final area would be great.
Thanks so much for the pics!!! This helps sooo much!! I am starting to feel like I am going get this one fixed.
Thanks as always Andy!! Could you clarify one thing for me? You quoted Nomad that R272 is a 10K and Nomad had commented that R249 is a 10K. You also referenced R272 later in your reply. I will go over every resistor around the regulator to be sure that they are in spec. Also, I will wait to...
Thanks sooo much Bama!!!! This is so helpful and is why we all need a schematic for this radio. Is your board number an 11D? Also, could you possibly take a few pictures of the board so I can verify resistors and other parts? I have a few parts that are not there and I am unsure if they were...
One more update to this very long repair. I am checking each part in the TX chain and I have discovered that Q52 has a 2sc2059 installed. The schematic for that same part in the 98VHP (and many other radios) has a 2sc1906. I wish I had the schematic for the 99v2 with the EPT690011D to be sure...
A night off did me good. Now I have a fresh head to look at this radio again. I did start by looking at the one mod I have not considered yet. The Palomar Max Mod. That is an upgraded AM regulator. The install of it was ok but I did check the voltages of it. The regulator for that radio...
Things took a turn....
I did not have a lot of extra time for working on this radio but I couldn't resist hooking up a VR in place of R249. The result was interesting. I was able to "peak" the wattage reading using the VR and it turned to to read 156ohms. I did have to switch to a 500ohm pot...
Alright... you gave me a lot to do :(. Here is what I've done so far.
- Tested the audio from the PA. The audio is loud and clear.
- Checked the caps at the tank coupling circuit. Both were good.
- Replaced cap C214 with various values. This had no effect that I could tell.
- I did hook...
Hi Andy,
1st of all, thanks for your reply!!! I do appreciate your time that you give me with your answers.
Now, I am understanding that you agree that I should just leave the bias at 34ma (or just at 3.5vdc for each final). Right? Here is the real "problem" that I am trying to solve as I...
Kaos, I am wondering if the frequency alignment is that far off. In other words, your radio is on channel 19 am and you are injecting audio at the antenna jack on channel 19 am but the frequency alignment is so far off that the radio internally (not the dial) is on another channel.
Hey Everyone,
OK, this 99v2 is going to kill me. I now have the frequency aligned (with the help of some beez wax) and now to the final overall alignment. With the new 520's (and full power) as I set the bias I can get the driver to 50ma and the voltage is below 3.75 as specified in the 98VHP...
