I installed a cap that I found on Ebay for my switches that mounts in one of the side element holes and it works great. It took me about 10 minutes to install it and I didn't have to drill any holes in the case...
That I don't know, but you definitely have a drain somewhere. It just can't be a direct short or something would have popped, either the fuse or a trace on the board. It's got to be one of the caps I just wouldn't know which one.
I'm not a fan of the mosfet amps they are slapping on their radios. I think the 2x2290 amps were the perfect size for adding to a mobile radio. Anything more is richard swinging, just get an external amp. It's better for the radio.
I have an original black face 5 band Jackson that is very stock that I'd be willing to part with.
Here is a video I made a few years ago. Let me know what you think it's worth and we'll talk.
If Cobra still uses something close to their old SN# scheme, my guess would be that radio was manufactured in Sept of 22, J being the ninth (skipping I) month indicator.
Here is the schematic for the 1998 build, which most likely is the revision you are working on. Sorry for the bad information.

My guess is that it was a mistake in manufacturing. It's kinda like ordering a QP W/cheese and Mcdonald's, no cheese, they get the paper stating that and attach it to the box, but still put cheese on it because they go through the motions so often that muscle memory takes over and they screw it up.
