    11 meter is very quiet?

Jealous but glad you are doing so well and stock to boot.

    11 meter is very quiet?

I tried that here and I could not get 5 miles successfully. Change to the vertical in a tree and I get him fine. Terrain here is really wild throughout the town and between local towns.

    11 meter is very quiet?

The way Boise is laid out there are a lot of high points in town and low points. The north end of town drops down behind a nice cliff wall so people have to have a pretty tall tower to talk over it. No one has a tower that I know of. The town at 28 miles from us is behind a couple of pretty...

    11 meter is very quiet?

Well I got my Bearcat 980 and a home-brew quarterwave vertical connected. Vertical is up at 12 feet to the feed point. It was snowing so that is all the effort I put into it today. When it warms up I will try to get it up another 10 feet up into the tree. There wasn't a lot of traffic. I...

How are the new Bearcat 980 radios now?

Back in the day I had a trick light bulb. Inside the frosted bulb was a battery and bulb. You could not see it of course but oh when you shorted it out with a little strip of aluminum in your mouth it was fun to see the look on peoples faces. Anyway my dad freaked out when he saw it. Thought...

How are the new Bearcat 980 radios now?

Not that there is any real current flowing through that particular set of wires. Darn it though I may never be able to plug in an external speaker in there again. Oh well.

How are the new Bearcat 980 radios now?

Thanks Shadetree Mechanic and also Homer BB. Good input from both.

Ok thanks for sharing. I have my 980 at 3 watts DK on AM going into a Cobra 250 amp. I am going to turn it down to just around 2 watts DK on AM. My SSB is right around 8 watts but I may try turning it down to around 4-5 watts going into my Cobra 250 amp. I also have an RM Itally 203. I have...

How are the new Bearcat 980 radios now?

Could not find a real repair but a wad of aluminum pushed into the external speaker jack seems to be a quick and dirty fix for me. I may just live with that for awhile. I will set this radio up as my base station.

So Redbeard are you saying you have backed your SSB output on the McKinley to 4 watts to drive your amp?

I absolutly hate the "It works" on the radio checks. Now if I do a check on lets say 146.52 on the 2 meter band people want to know what you are running. Radio, antenna, maybe even coax. They are really into what people are using to be on the air. CB just seems like a "don't bother me" zone...

How are the new Bearcat 980 radios now?

Yes I am having the no sound from internal speaker problem with my older 980. Did a search on Youtube and found out what it was. Did the little push on the external jack and sound came from the internal speaker. Now to find how to get the jack to make contact like it should so the internal...

    11 meter is very quiet?

I have a radial field of 30 radials of various lengths. The verticals I use with the radials are for the 30/17/12 meter band. I just got it into my head to have those antennas for those bands together for no real reason. My other verticals for 40 and 20 meters are built in a tree with 2 or 3...

How are the new Bearcat 980 radios now?

The display problem I had was I would turn on the 980 and the LEDs would begin to fade on output after half an hour. You just could not see the lower section of the front panel. Turn it off and come back the next day and the LEDs were fine but after awhile they would fade out again. It was...

    11 meter is very quiet?

Isn't that the truth Shadetree. I was goofing around yesterday putting up a 12 meter vertical quarter wave antenna onto a ground mounted radial field. Did some FT-8 and with conditions as they were Japan and Belize were easily reachable that day with the new antenna.

How are the new Bearcat 980 radios now?

I had an older 980 that I used for awhile. I decided to buy a newer one and had all sorts of trouble from it. LEDs faded after it had been on awhile. I read reviews that this was a problem with a batch of them for awhile. I returned it. I still have an older one but it has developed a...

    11 meter is very quiet?

Those 8 foot long fiberglass antennas may fall apart today but I have one from back in the 80s that is in perfect shape and I still use it. On the end just above the screw in connector it says it was made by Shakespeare. I have held onto it for all these years and glad I did.

    11 meter is very quiet?

When you call out for a radio check on CB I often hear a very curt "it's working" and that's the end of it. I got my amateur radio license this last year and if you call out for a check people want to talk about your equipment and get into a fun rag chew about the hobby.

    11 meter is very quiet?

I agree Redbeard U812 about not knowing if you are being heard and how it sounds. I make changes to antennas or whatever and no one answers calls. You wonder if anything is even working? Calling out for radio checks gets no responses because there just isn't anyone there. Very frustrating.
