I have a very basic question here. It seems you saw an SWR of 1.5 on channel 1, and an SWR of 2 on channel 40. I had something similar when I was tuning my K30 antenna. I know my antenna is different than yours but I figured SWR behaves the same as you tune one. I figured as the SWR comes down...
I didn’t really study on that feature too much since they all had it. I kinda just figured it works the same from one model to the next. About the only thing to consider is did I want it in knob form or push button, LOL!
In all seriousness, that is something to consider for many other features...
After getting my radio, I finally understand RF gain a lot better. It reduces noise and signal both, but I guess the selectivity of this radio seems to cut the noise a little more than it does the voice signals. I’ve been able to tweak it to help reduce noise and hear distant stations better...
I wish I’d seen this before I cut on the whip to tune it. I had it dead center. I just now moved it about a foot towards the rear. I’ll check SWR again and see how it has improved. Yesterday I experimented with it moved back even further and with no other changes I saw the SWR drop a 1/4 on...
Wow. I thought center was best for an even radiation pattern. I’m kinda glad to hear that though because that means I can move it back closer to where I thought it looked better AND had a seemingly lower SWR.
Another question. Does NOT having 18’ of coax affect anything? I’ve read to always...
What can cause SWR to be one setting one day, and be something different the next day?
For reference, this is a K30 antenna positioned in the center of the roof of my crew cab Frontier truck. I set the SWR on my antenna last night and I was absolutely sure it was at 1.75 on channels 1 and 40. I...
Well I installed if all tonight. My overall height is 107”, just under 9’. That’s 37” of antenna on top of 70” of truck. I’d say that should clear everything I’ve seen here locally. Lowest drive thru I’ve seen is 9’4”.
This is in a 2023 Nissan Frontier. I put in a President Johnny III radio running on a K30 antenna. I did the best I could to tune it, taking it out into the countryside on an open highway and parking in a field so nothing was around me as much as possible. The SWR ended up being about 1.75 on...
Yeah, I’d love the added performance but I was trying to keep it shorter because we have a lot of low hanging branches here over our roads. Not to mention drive thru clearances, I expect to scrape even with the K30 on the roof. Some are under 10’ high.
Will it make a difference setting the SWR on a magnetic antenna before I run the coax through the vehicle? I’d like to tune it and see how well it works before I go to the trouble of pulling panels and running the cable.
I guess I should have looked into this before ordering. I got the K30 antenna and its packaging says nothing about if it can receive weather band frequencies or not. I also bought a Cobra HG A1500 antenna to compare side by side with the K30, and I know it can receive weather. It is advertised...
Right. He said that in the video also, and I plan to do it. I just want to understand it better.
What I comprehended from the video was not to simply fasten the chassis ground to the DC power ground, but instead run it to the vehicle frame. What I don’t understand is what difference it makes...
Saw a video where a guy demonstrated noise being reduced simply because he touched the radio with his hand. He said the body of the radio needs to be grounded and it will help reduce noise. He suggested just removing one of the screws from the sheet metal of the cover and use a ring terminal...
I ordered a Surecom SW-114 meter to use with my antenna setup. I saw several different ones on Amazon that all look like the same meter sold under a different name. Are there any differences, or is it all the same one, just rebranded again?
These are three of the ones I saw (listed below)...
I managed to find a 3 foot jumper available with a PL-259 on one end and an SO-239 on the other, so that will simplify things if I have to use it. As for the type of coax, I’m limited to whatever the K30 antenna comes with, which I think is just RG58. I hope it will reach. I want the antenna...
I just ordered my radio setup. I chose a President Johnny III radio and a K40 model K30 antenna. I realized after I bought the antenna that the coax length is only 15 feet. I think this might end up 2-3 feet short to reach the radio. To me the simple solution is to add a double ended SO-239...
I’ve made a few posts now. Been looking to get into radio but have read that CB is dead. Well I mainly want it for getting info when on the highway, as well as just general interest in listening to whatever is on it.
I took a trip on Monday that involved 10 hours of driving on the highways. I...
Thank you for that great, in-depth answer. I had to read it twice, several hours apart, to fully comprehend it, but after the second read through I feel I have a much better understanding of RF gain and what it does. Also the noise filters, too.
Now, the trouble is, finding a radio that has...
I wasn’t really planning on having one peaked and tuned because I don’t yet fully understand what all it does. My basic understanding has always been changing the power output from 4 watts to some higher number. I’d like to understand radio modifications in greater detail. Right now I’m shopping...
Thank you for that explanation. It helps a lot!
OK, so I’m comprehending that the squelch DOES NOT reduce the radio’s sensitivity to signals or noise, it simply sets a threshold that the signal strength or noise strength will need to break before it lets the sound come through. An incoming...
