Anyone got any experience with a yc156 (3cx5000)?

I've built a few 156 and 179 amps. Single and multiple. What exactly do you want to know, besides what I posted before? --Toll_Free

trying to get world wide again

Ed, I do the same thing you're talking about here, ultra mod. I have my own modulator design (a series mod, class A) that I played with a bit. It will modulate up to a single class C 80 watt PEP transistor. I use it to modulate a Cobra 2000. LOUD, yeah.... 75 watts carrier, 750 PEP...

trying to get world wide again

Ed, Was that you that checked into the AMI net from .ca this Wednesday? Don't have the link tuner up, so can only run 100 watts here into the remote tuna, but nice signal into central cali, if that was you on 80. --Toll_Free

trying to get world wide again

You don't get a modulation increase with ANY amplifier.... Unless it's MODULATED. And a MODULATOR is not something that will MODULATE your linear. All the "loudness" people strive for on 11 meters has a technical term, it's called Intermodulation Distortion. --Toll_Free

trying to get world wide again

Sorry, va3, but you run a 375 watt carrier, and 100 percent modulate it, you're running 1500 watts PEAK... THAT's your swing. I second everything else. --Toll_Free

trying to get world wide again

20 pounder. There are a couple JB boxes with that nomenclature. Since you have the one that does 120-150 watts, I'd say you have a low tube... Get that tube replaced, and use IT to drive the Henry. OR, use the D & A on the LOW side with the RADIO as a driver into the Henry, when the...

    amplifier cooling fan

I did an amplifier like your talking about. It sat behind the seat of my GMC 4x4 pickup, so I HAD to have cooling. I mounted a fan to it, and powered it from the power switch. HOLY MOLY, that was a mistake! It was LOUDER than the AC Blower on HIGH!!! That's when I discovered lifting the...

    High voltage arcing in amp?

Yup, we are the idiots: 1. We have working equipment. We maintain it ourselves. We are stupid. 2. We didn't make the STATEMENT that we fixed our amplifier, then in the SAME paragraph STATE that it was doing the EXACT same thing as it was before. 3. We didn't shotgun the approach to...

    amplifier cooling fan

Dude, Lift the fans about 3/4 of an inch above the heat sinks (makes them a LOT quieter), and put a resistor in line. Just let them spin all the time. The trick is to lift the fans off the sink, use fans BIG enough to be able to slow down (big slow fans = quiet).. Thermistors are hit /...

    High voltage arcing in amp?

In the early days of radio, they didn't use coax, etc. Things where MUCHO different. Collins radio invented the "collins coupler", what we call the pi net today, which pretty much puts us at the point we are..... I agree, not having Cblock is dangerous... It also means you can't have a...

    High voltage arcing in amp?

There are even commercial amps that omit Cblock... Not in the last 50 or so YEARS, but they DID exist. Some people have put them on the opposite side of the coil as well, between L and Ctune. --Toll_Free

    High voltage arcing in amp?

Ima gonna guess that he didn't VNA, GDO or otherwise VERIFY the tuning of his new coil was actually RESONANT at 11 meters, instead of 6 :) With a 6 meter tank, you can get a resonance on 11 meters..... And since it's ACTUALLY tuned to 6, you also usually get a nice peak in the wattmeter...

    High voltage arcing in amp?

So your coil works, but your amplifier still doesn't. Even though you reported you 'found' the problem of the mica insulator, you state it STILL arc's. Either English or repair isn't your good point. We are all waiting to see which it is. --Toll_Free

Anyone got any experience with a yc156 (3cx5000)?

I agree w shockwave... I'd go with the W4ZT triode board, or roll something similiar. Ian, G3SEK also makes a board that works well. --Toll_Free

Anyone got any experience with a yc156 (3cx5000)?

The YC-156 and it's cousin are pretty much, as you stated and heard, 3CX15,000s with a 5Kw anode cooler, AND A SMALLER GRID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep that in mind. It's like a 3CX5000, with the grid of an 8877! At half the price of said 8877, though :) With almost 4 times the diss :)...

    Galaxy 225

BEFORE YOU PROCEED, FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU DID WRONG BEFORE!!! Obviously you did SOMETHING wrong, or you wouldn't have seen smoke! The area you're going to be working in CAN AND WILL BE DAMAGED IF YOU SHORT SOMETHING....... Chances are, you put a short from positive to negative on the last...

    Messenger 800 help

Wile: The m800 IS NOT a pair of 4Vs... That was the M8V, and I don't think that ever went really to market. It was the M2000 boards, with MRF454s in it. Before Toshiba came out with theirs. My M2000 started out as a M8V, and one day Victor called up and said bring it down, I got an upgrade...

    Amp Supply LA 450 problem

What's kinda funny is this: Out of ALL the companies that have come and gone, it seems Dentron has more people "that worked their" or where owners, etc. Not pointing any fingers, but I think I've heard more stories about or from people that worked at Dentron, for Dentron or something...

    Messenger 800 help

What exactly are you wanting to know... I have an M2000, an M1200, and a M4V that someone tried to convert to 2879s. The m4v will NOT stand up to being converted, ESPECIALLY if it had the MRF455s in it in the first place. ENSURE you have an M800 (2290s) or M1200 (2879s) FIRST.... I got...
